Yeah, slow…Yeah , yeah, yeah.

that’s the ticket…( said the chicken hawk)

I took the weekend off and I forgot to double check the measurements. I just glued the halves together without thinking of the back porch length.

I got lucky and the measurement I added was the right amount that I wanted. It’s tuff getting old!

There seems to be a difference in where the fuel tank is mounted. I’ve seen some towards the front and others towards the rear? Maybe a difference in production years?

I think I may pull the trucks away from the pilots a bit…

Joe

You stretching out for the braking fan?

Yes the fuel tanks/configurations were moved around with production years

That middle fan section is for dynamic braking? Now I know. I have to build a removable hatch with it on top. The gas tank was too short. Behind the air tanks on the brakeman’s side are a double compartment of something. Are they batteries? Something for the passenger cars? They were an inch too small also.

Everything needs to be stretched!

Thanks Sir!

Joe,

You had 3 questions because I re-read this 3 times like some recommend.

My answers to your questions are

{See Below}

1.Yes

2…Yes

3…Yes and No

However I would recommend that you make some changes to the upper parallelogram of the fifth quadrant on the hinged lateral radiant of the jamb on the the goat locker door. My suggestion would be to simply attach a pair of hip waders to the back side of the door then drill a hole or multiple ones on the front side of the door (depending on coupler height or goat preferences).

I personally did it this way so that is how it should be done. When you make this modification we would appreciate a review on your results in case any necessary changes need to be made to the manufacturing errors you missed.

I tell ya Dave, I have to give you big props on yours. After studying the details and comparing yours, you hit the mark. Just the shape of the fuel tank had me working extra today trying to match it.

Yes this is your post overall. I’m just a guest. You can moderate and make fun of me too. I still look up to your skills and the fact that you achieved something that few even appreciate fully. Now that I’m trying to build one, shows me just how difficult it really is to achieve your level of modeling. The fact that you maintain such a sense of humor here, will leave your mark on this forum as a jokester. Your talent as a modeler is fantastic.

(enough sucking up for now…???..)

Joe,

Modeling modern diesels with all the goodies added on is just as hard or harder to build from scratch than steam. Many will argue that unless they have done both (I have). Thankfully there were plenty hear on LSC to goad me on as to what I missed and what didn’t look right! I’m enjoying your progress and ignore my demented sense of humor either you get it or you don’t. “Pictures Joe, study LOTS of pictures”. Model what your eye sees and don’t worry about scale. There are a few things I missed on my 40 build however like the shell that you have already Ralph Brown gave you the basics and you can add all the detail from there. What’s funny if you look at the 40 in HO version most of the seriously detailed models missed a LOT especially the exhaust stack that is in correctly reversed on almost all the “detailed HO models I have seen”. Most won’t notice that and it matters not.

Build on and share the progress as I’m digging it if no one else is. OR perhaps they are and watching in the shadows for your results??

So the fuel tank alone, to me, is a challenge. It has a stepped down area that lowers it below the frame, or maybe it’s welded to the frame in real life? The thing that makes it more special, is not only it’s size, but it has sloped down top edges as well. I believe it’s unique to this engine? It’s not that way on the MP15AC switcher I built anyways. It doesn’t seem to match anything else I’ve looked at.

So I found a casting that came from an extra attempt for my switcher build. It has so thick of casting on the edges that I could grind it down to match what I’m seeing. I’ll take another phot when the shape is finalized. It’s tough to put all this into words anyways so here’s what it looks like:

I lost my picture resizer when my old computer got hacked (again). I guess this new thing with the mini pictures will work fine, just click on them to see full sized.

My Great trains example has prototype build stamped on the bottom. I don’t know if the production units used the same glue? Getting the fuel tank and battery boxes off took some extra work that I never expected. Great glue job!

With all this work underneath I’m left thing of making the shell detailing better as well. At least new fans and vents if possible. The grabs seem heavy for the scale of the shell. I would love to have the wind shield detailing made better like Dave’s example. I may just get her running and add to the details later. I have two other units that I never finished either!

Just get a photobucket account Joe. Resizes for you and you can direct link the pics.

Back in the day^^^^^^^^^^

Maybe these might help as well but remember my 40 is big!

for all these half hidden details you need an elevated layout. at eye level!

Yes Korm you are correct but ground level shots are fantastic if you are still able to get down there and see it

Building stages Joe and hoping to help you out. She is a hard prototype to model as there are many versions but the main lines are still there on all the 1:1 units

Wow, thanks for the pics. I will look closely when I get home.

got the shape of the fuel tank roughed in and working on the frame too.

Mine’s a little bit rougher than yours Dave!

Dave who?

I think them tickets are a couple hundred a piece. I don’t make nearly as much money as you do.

Hehe…Shawn was once a “napkin builder”

Air tanks “usually” go on the opposite side of the battery boxes for a mid production unit
