Building a 1:20 Mikado

No plow. We don't get enough snow here to justify a plow. :D :D :D
I dont know Bruce this global warming thing seems to be bringing the snow to you guys and leaving us up this way dry. Maybe I will have to send you my plow. LOL

You know it is kind of strange that the EBT did not have any plows? I guess when the snow got deep, the mines just closed until it melted.

They did have a plow, though photos of it haven’t surfaced. There is a wedge-shaped thing still in Rockhill Furnace that people assumed was a plow. There are “stories” of that plow being pushed by a locomotive, but there’s no hardware to indicate how it could have been mounted, and just sitting it on the rails and pushing it would not have worked. (To say nothing of the fact that it’s so spindly in construction that a locomotive would likely have shattered it if pushed from behind. There’s a photo of a similar device sitting next to the track at Rocky Ridge, so I’m inclined to believe it was some kind of flanger used to clear the ice in the tunnels. I haven’t a clue how it would have been used, though. Perhaps dragged through by mules/horses?

The 1917 ICC report specifically lists a plow built by the EBT shops in 1909 at a cost of $225. By comparison, the three cabooses are listed as having cost $300, so this plow would have been a substantial piece of equipment. (The cabooses are also listed as having been built in 1909, though we know that date is incorrect.)

Fantastic work on this loco… I love all the plumbing and other details.

Thanks for the reply, Kevin. I have seen and speculated on how that steel/wood appliance would have been used. Strange that a big storm would not have produced a newspaper story of EBT Number 15 or one of the others pushing through the snow in some areas that certainly would have drifted.

EBT site says dragged behind ballast cars to help level

Another shot of the backhead.

I started work on piping for the air pumps today. It takes awhile to make the connections, but I like the overall look. The handles came from pieces off of the donor Annie.

Just looking at that I’m thinking it’s not going to be easy to paint. You’ll have to disassemble everything, no? Hard to get behind all that detail work. It’ll be worth it

I hope not. Even though it is made to come apart, I had planned to just spray it and use a brush to touch up where the paint doesn’t want to go. Right now, the cab is not attached, nor the boiler assembly. Frame is separate and painted already.

We’ll see…

Looks great Bruce.

Is this like looking at yourself in a merrior cuz my dog does that all the time.

Ok, so at 50c a view, lets see, Bruce, you owe me about $13,000. I’ll take a check.

I thought the forum owner paid me??? Sheesh, I guess I’ll have to finish this soon before I owe much more.

I thought the Advertisers paid per view. So it looks to me like you are making money for Bob, and he has the nerve to send you a bill :o

[I know it doesn’t really work that way here, but it’s more fun]

I’m taking bets on what will happen first -
Bruce finishing the Mikado versus All this freakin’ snow melting!

Which way are you betting? I think I might have some influence on one of the outcomes.

I really would like the snow to melt so I can take a picture of it outside on the track.

I suspect it will be painted before this snow melts, especially since they are talking a bit more come this Tuesday.

This almost has as many views as that one topic a few summers ago when we was cussin’ and discussin the weather.

It’s getting closer. Finished the plumbing on the fireman’s side.

Added some detail in the cab. Not sure why, as it really won’t be visible. I guess I just wanted to use those Annie parts…

Used some Magic Scuplt to make the armrests on the cab. They still have to be painted.
