Building a 1:20 Mikado

Wow Bruce good job! Sure glad you are doing this, quite a bit will apply to my 844 build, if I ever get the rotary done!

I’m amazed…someone actually listened to something I said…SWMBO will be SHOCKED!

You said something?

 I was thinkin' the same thing! I don't remember it! LMAO

Much better! Nice solution too.

Thanks guys. I’m a lot happier with these rods now. I got a chance to pose my Mikado with Robbie’s K27 when we visited Ric’s last weekend.

That came out great. Hard to believe when going back from when you started this project till know. Amazing

And I thought the K’s were big. Holy Crap - That’s HUGE !!!

I could see Bruce putting a seat on the tender and riding it around the yard!

Cant wait to see it painted and weathered! That is huge. BZ!!

But then he’d probably end up looking like Ken …

Bruce,
It looks great. Here’s a question I should have asked when you started. How do you cut the acrylic you use?
Dave

Dave,
The only acrylic is the base of the tender; I cut it on my Microlux table saw - it has variable speed and I cut it on the lowest available.

The styrene is typically cut by scribing a straight line and then snapping it along that line.

…grinning…

Sigh.....No respect........ on October 21 around 0952

I guess filing it to shape on say a belt sander and then soldering on a couple of brass strips would be too easy?

Oh, NOW you wake up!

That’s looking really great–what a beast. Please get it painted up so I can admire it further!

Now that wasn’t nice pickin’ on Ken like that! I love that shot though …I laugh every time I see it!

Finally got around to working on this again. Ran into a few problems, so my progress was not quite what I had in mind. I have been struggling with how to make some of the valve gear pieces, and finally hit on this solution.

At the top, is the original Union Link (Anchor Link) from the Bachmann Anniversary. It’s a tad short, as the EBT one is about 2 feet long. Below that, is the piece I made. I had some 1/8" square brass tube. I cut this into 6 inch sections (scale). Next I ground away about 4" to leave some “fingers”. I had some 1/8" x 1/32" brass bar and used it for the main part of the link. I ground some slots in each of the fingers and soldered it in place. It’s rather strong and should look good once painted.
