Building 4 wheeled rolling stock

Since aquiring two new steamers (Cricket and Regner Lumberjack) the Kittatinny shop decided they need to build some 4 wheeled cars to go with the new steamers. After looking at some plans the guys came up with a design (it was modified to fit the journals and the railroad). The guys wanted a plan that would be simple, fast to build and worked.

The basic frame without the journals.

Journals, wheels and side beam added.

Jig to make the process go faster.

So far two frames with wheels and journals have been built. The plan is to make a few flat cars, a boxcar, gondola and a logging caboose.

I bought 2 log buggies scratch built from wood at the East Coast Train Show. The guys plan to make a few more of those.

Neat… Cant tell how you are mounting the journals. On my 4 wheel “Quarry flats” I mounted the journals permanent to the beams, only to find that I could not remove the wheels!! Solved that by making the beam removable and screwed down. Here is a pic of the bottom side.

Not important of you never plan to remove the wheels.

Neat.

Where do you get the hardware?

Ozark’s castings seen too soft to me. But maybe not.

John the journals are from ebay. http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/pasidump/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 You cant bat te price especially when you need alot. I did buy the link and pin from the above link but they are a tad too big so Im going with ozark. The hex nuts are from micro fasteners. For side pockets I like to use those insulated cable staples.

I agree Ozarks are good for certain things but most is too soft I find.

Those journals are a nylon type plastic and pretty durable, I have link/pin couplers from the same ebay seller, the guy is in Sri Lanka (no joke) but is a very good seller.

Shawn IS IS DONE YET???

Lol I new you would like them Vic. I got the planks on today and built two more flat cars. I need to order more of the Bachmann small wheels but RLD wants over $16 to ship two packages of wheels ouch. Have to look around.
I hope to start the boxcar and caboose in the next few days. My next project will be larger rolling stock to replace my plastic ones.

That guy from Sri Lanka is very good and his stuff are excellent. I coulnt see spending $8-12 for the ozarks. Would have costed me over $50.

While waiting for the glue to dry I started working on my sawmill to work with my live steam traction engine.

For uninsulated wheels think tinplate parts at your next local train show… O ga, #1 ga, Std ga… lots of choices, cheap too. You can remount them if you want insulated ones…

So far I got 4 flats and one frame built. Next I have to sand thm down and add stake pockets to three of the flats and then weather them.

The nice weather latley slowed me down on the indoor projects. I did manage to get more done on the cold mornings and the cold rainy days like today. I just about completed the logging caboose. Just waiting for the decals to dry so can weather them some. The three flats have been weathered and detailed. One of the flats will become a gondola. I also started on the boxcar.

Fleet so far

Start of the boxcar. The Logging caboose was built the same way.

I ran out of scribbed wood so I made my own using a jig saw blade and dragging it down a piece of boxwood board. Not too bad in my eyes.

I should get alot of attention from the woman then

Very nice work Shawn.

Great stuff, lots of character and very authentic looking.

What wheels are you using?

Good solution to the immovable journals problem.

Cool stuff, the caboose came out nice.

Thanks Guys. Ray im using the Bachmann small wheels. They seems to work well.

Just an update. The sides were put on the boxcar as well as the doors. I started working on the brass detail parts. First time really working with brass, bending and getting the shape I need. I could have made the brass about half the width but I wanted to use what I had on hand. It was a challenge bending the brass but I think I got it.

Fine looking fleet Shawn. Those boys in the shop must be working overtimee!

Well I finally finished the box car today. That should complete my roster for 4 wheeled cars until next winter. I was not crazy how the brass looked for the door slidered etc… They stuck out to far and a tad too big. I ended up making sliders out of wood. Looks much better. Here is the completed car.
