Build Challenge 2013 from the Loyet Logging Company

Got the toolbox finished last night. Build out of some more leftover wood from the kit and some plastic rivet strap from the parts bin to act as hinges

and here it is painted, weathered, and installed on the deck

Got the handrails installed last night. I had some snap on tee’s in the parts bin so I painted them and attached them to the tank. then I took some rod and bent them to shape and installed them. I have also installed a brake wheel on the other end.

next is couplers and more brake rigging. stay tuned…

Cheering here. Glad I ain’t judging these builds…

Really nice…I too am glad I do not have to judge, fun just watching everyone else!

Beautiful. I love the handrails.

Tom

looks really good! I like the foil tape as metal.

Terry

Thanks Everyone! In the home stretch, putting the finishing touches on the past couple of days. Here is the other end of the car showing the brake wheel and ladder I added from a scrapped 10 wheeler tender. I have also added glad hands and a pair of kadees from a scrapped project.

last night I added some dry transfers I had. I have dubbed it #3 for the line since it will be serving skidder #3 when finished. I have also added some brake shoes from the bin.

next is weathering and it should be finished. stay tuned…

I’m impressed by how close your model comes to the prototype, Aaron. Really, really well done!

… and another first place winner…

Finished!!! put the final touches on this morning. Here it is out of the shop

an over head shot of the car. I used a piece of solder for the hose

and now a few closeups

I see the pump has been acting up again as they got out the “fix all” tool

I decided to go subtle on the weathering on this one for now using india ink washes, but need a little more on the trucks, will post a couple more when the weathering is complete.

Beautiful model!! I love all the neat details and the very nicely done trucks. Quite an inspiration!!!

Tom

Yup. That’s really sweet. I’m going to have to raise my standards some. Real daylight makes a HUGE difference to our photographs, doesn’t it?

Thanks Tom and John! Here are a couple more photos, I did another wash on the trucks and they look a little more used now

Yeah I think "the Beast" could chug down that fuel in the car in a couple of minutes flat.

I wonder what the overall fuel consumption was in these big loaders?? I’ ll bet it was enormous and I wonder if they had dedicated water cars too for the boiler or had pumps and water lines to any nearby streams?? A very interesting prototype you are modelling.

Tom

That is a great looking model. That solder for a hose is a great idea. Nicely done.

Thanks everyone! Today I caught shay #14 running up to camp 8 with fuel car #3 along with a water car (still under construction) and the skidder movers and a log loader to finish operations while the skidder is being moved. Here are a couple photos (http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s414/trainbuffjr1/fueltrain-ihcbash006_zps9a057b51.jpg)I think they may want to get a track gang out here to work on the r.o.w. before bringing the beast through here :stuck_out_tongue: (http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s414/trainbuffjr1/fueltrain-ihcbash005_zps7ed6a099.jpg)and here is a loader at the head end of the rig, the crew always do things backwards around here hehehe  (http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s414/trainbuffjr1/fueltrain-ihcbash007_zps8f479a8d.jpg)@ Tom, not sure how many cars were asigned to the skidder, but I imagine a few water cars were in order, I think it had a duplex pump on the back that could also bring water from a nearby stream. I will be adding one to it one of these days along with a “fixall” hammer next to it hehe

Wow that looks sharp, I recognize a few of those detail parts. I was going to ask what the hose was, soldering wire? I think I still have some.

Thanks Vic! Yep, I used a length of solder wire for the hose. I learned the technique from Wayne Spence, he used this method on his water cars, and it looked very realistic so I decided to give it a try. It is very flexible so it is easy to work with and make it conform to the car surface. Here is a link to Wayne’s page which has some great photos of a water car with these hoses on them

Great looking models Aaron!

Beautiful models. What a neat loader. You have got some really cool logging goodies. Very nice.
