Bubbling Paint?

Tonight painted a stripe on the cab of my S4 project and 90% of it bubbled up like crazy. The thing is earlier I sprayed the same paint on the same base coat on both sides of the hood and it was perfect.
I’m using rustoleum. The area was masked off so I wiped off the bubbles which also took the base coat off then resprayed and about 40% of it bubbled so I wiped that off too. I have never had this happen, what gives? It doesn’t make sense that there would be something on the cab that wasn’t on the hood.
Strange.

If the shell was clean then the paint was out of whack. Either too cold or the paint could be bad or it wasn’t mixed completely.

“it took off the base coat”

Sounds like you put it on too wet, and the solvent in the paint reacted with the base paint.

Todd,

I think you will find better luck with Krylon paints. They have a gray primer that usually cuts through any residue that may be present on the models. A couple quick mists of primer can also save you time when trying to cover existing colors. If you have a color that is only available through Rustoleum, I would use either Krylons primer or Rustoleums primer (brown?) first.

Look at the “Re-coat time” on the label. Rustoleum is very picky. It’s usually within an hour or after something like 24 hours. I agree with the Krylon recommendation - most of theirs are ‘re-coat any time’.

Interesting. I have found the rustoleum to be a better paint than krylon.
Both cab and hood were painted grey then sat for a day plus. The yellow sprayed on the hood is perfect. The same paint on the cab bubbled. I’m starting to wonder if I had something on my fingers. I had mixed some gas for the chainsaw and got some on my hand. Could enough gas stay on my hand after 5-6 washes? I will revisit the paint job today.

Todd,

Was this an enamel paint? If it was and the base coat was put down and you painted over it withing 24-48 hours (depending on temperature) the bubbling is caused by the new wet paint reacting with the not yet absolutely dry base coat.

If not enamel then I’m at a loss.

Best,

TJ

I thought all Rustoleum paints in a rattle can were enamel …Also the “mixed” gas on the fingers didn’t help if the bubbling only happened in those areas that were touched.
