Large Scale Central

Bridge walkway question

I started a thread for my new bridge here: http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=16830 But I have a question regarding bridge walkways, just wondering how they are laid out. i looked for pics but didn’t find what i was looking for. so here are the options I have wondering what people think. option 1: this is a two board walkway, kinda boring…

option 2: this is a two board on each side.

option 3: four boards on one side. I kinda like this one

Which one do you like and why? Terry

Personally, I like the walkway on both sides… Seems to me, that would make it easier for maintenece folks to walk the bridge and check rail and spikes…

And, if you put the walkway on both sides, then Rooster can’t tell you, you put the walkway on the wrong side…

I like them on both, meself.

Yep I think on both sides. Makes the bridge look more even.

Terry,

Hope this link works. A Scale drawing of Garden Metal Models catwalks and handrails.

Personally I like catwalks on BOTH sides.

You need a walk way on both sides so I can fish off both sides. Duh!

Three planks and a wood guard rail on each side. Rick Here is what I meant by 3 planks and a guard rail

Don’t listen to him Terry cause next thing ya’ know he will be asking for an ADA compliant walkway!

As for the walkways …your RR your rules/choice is preached heavily here and there is an exception to every rule and darn near a prototype for everything (such as guardrails, bridge ties and walkways).
The bridge is freaking awesome and your friend does nice work as do you.
I/we love pictures!

I put the walkway on one side of a small bridge I built because the old prospector needed a walkway his mule wouldn’t fall off of!

Well the decision was half made… The bridge was a joint venture between the LA&CRR and the local lumber & furniture company. All three needed to cross the lake. So, the lumber co. supplied the wood for cost to the furniture co. and the RR built it. One request the Lumber and furniture Co. had though was a walkway wide enough for their employees to cross ‘safely’ on foot so they could get to work from town. Hence the four board walkway. Railroad crews have already complained though about service and inspection from the side without a walkway so the railroad is already looking into putting a like walkway on the other side.

Thats a great looking bridge Terry. Did your friend follow some plans when he built it. Maybe you could share the plans, I have a perfect place for a bridge like that. How close to Idaho are you? Hehehe

Chuck

I don’t know if Bob uses a plan or not. I told him I needed a 70.5" bridge and viola!! it appeared. maybe he’ll chime in here. Thanks for the compliments!

There isn’t much more out there now, still building structures. But here is the ‘rebuild’ thread of my layout to see the general track plan: http://www.mylargescale.com/Community/Forums/tabid/56/aff/9/aft/115422/afv/topic/Default.aspx I started it over there before i realized how cool you guys were  Terry

Since ya did such a nice job on that station, you’re forgiven…

Nice RR shots Terry !

Great looking layout Terry, I think you need to post some more pictures here. BTW how has your aluminum rail held up? I have a whole bunch of aluminum rail that I’m going to be laying this summer on my upper loop. I know the aluminum switches that I got from Switch-Crafters held up great.

Chuck

Bob the bridge builder here. I did follow a plan but you wanted a special length. So I sort of winged it. OOPS! Terry you wanted 70.5"?
I only made it 70". Bring it back, I’ll add another piece of wood on it.

Having been on the real thing (ie 12"=1’) in Arizona a few years back ( as in college late 50’s) as I recall it had no foot borads. Our Prof got cought on the bridge as a train came, did think the old man could move that fast! And it was close! But there were no foot boards and it was hard to walk on it to cross over.

Paul

Chuck, my aluminum rail has held up just fine. Happy i switched to it.
And bob, I think the span was 70.5 and I told you 70 so there would be wiggle room. Thanks again for the bridge.
