I began "legalizing: my bridge and two trestles today. Were the bridge rails early in last century installed and constructed like this?
Also, my bridge rails are going to be installed on the LGB track ties. Can I glue them or just nail them?

There are many variations on guard rails on bridges and switches. Find something that looks good to you and run with it.

Doug,
Depends on your era and gauge, as well.
I’m sure the Phather Phred will get in here, he loves “guard rails”
Backwoods narrow gauge, like me, use timbers as guard rails. (Or none.)
The railroad dates from the early 1930s and is a mining railroad so the retrofits will be flexible like your logging road. I was reading last night that for some trestles they didn’t even have platforms. They just put their water barrels on the ground by the beginning of the trestle!
Doug,
This is a true story, told by a couple of old logging shay engineer and fireman.
They were so scared of some of their rickety high trestles, the engineer would stop before the trestle.
The fireman would walk across and wait on the other side.
The engineer would put the shay in gear at a slow crawl, jump off and let the shay cross unattended.
The fireman would jump on the shay on the other side and take the train completely across.
The engineer would either jump on the last car, or if he was not certain, walk across once the train had completely crossed the trestle.
I’ll have to incorporate that into operations with the Shay!
That’s how they used to cross bridges with steam tractors too.
Exception to every rule in prototypical fashion…N.S Lurgan Branch…Ex Reading from Harrisburg to Hagerstown.
