Breaking the Sound Barrier

Ok folks, for all of you who have never personally seen the sound barrier, feast your eyes on the pictures. Actual photos of the sound barrier. This phenomenon only happens at the instant an aircraft breaks the sound barrier and it literally appears like the aircraft goes through a wall. I hope you find these pictures as fascinating as I did. WOW!

  :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the last one. That’s gotta be the fastest Piper ever!

I like the second from the last.
The “BUFF” was designed to a USAAC specification of 500MPH top speed.
Interestingly, various sources list it as 450MPH, 500MPH, 595MPH, to 650MPH.

The speed of sound is 773MPH:
T0 is 273.15 K (= 0 °C = 32 °F), giving a theoretical value of 331.3 m¡s-1 (= 1086.9 ft/s = 1193 km¡h-1 = 741.1 mph = 644.0 knots). Values ranging from 331.3-331.6 may be found in reference literature, however.
T20 is 293.15 K (= 20 °C = 68 °F), giving a value of 343.2 m¡s-1 (= 1126.0 ft/s = 1236 km¡h-1 = 767.8 mph = 667.2 knots).
T25 is 298.15 K (= 25 °C = 77 °F), giving a value of 346.1 m¡s-1 (= 1135.6 ft/s = 1246 km¡h-1 = 774.3 mph = 672.8 knots).

Looks more to me like somebody put pink fuel into the tanks on that BUFF.

The critical mach number for a B-52D is .97. Faster than thatn parts of the airframe go faster than the speed of sound and then they come off. That is not a good thing.

10,000 spare parts flying together in a loose formation.

Still, I have to give the guy credit. Good photoshop effort.

That was the definition of a Fairchild C-119 “Flying Boxcar”.
If you flew through a rain squall, you were wetter inside than it was outside.

Made my first four military jumps out of a 119. That was awhile back…

At least you didn't date yourself by telling us it was an 82.
