Box for Rail Truck

So whatcha think…housing 12 AA batt. and RCS gear…

Good? Bad? Ugly? (YES!) Ideas? just made top of box-all scribed 1/8 ply used track spikes instead of pin nails

Guess if I do use this box, I could “Chain” it down to make it a little more realistic…it is big 1:1 = 5 1/4" x 2 1/4" thanks for looking and offering opinions cale

I think it is good, just unfinished.

Stand the inside of the box if it will be exposed… or is the top just not yet finished? As far as that goes, I would at least seal the inside of the box to prevent warping when exposed to the weather.

Good job

Cale,
Most battery-r/c need some ventilation. I think you better plan on that somehow.

Cale ,
I think it needs external bracing . Most crates on wagons have external planks holding the whole thing together , with extra thick ones underneath for fork lift access .

Steve, Ric and Mike Thanks for your replies! Here is where we stand this am! built up sides and top bracing–

I installed a post along inside of structure to allow airspace between bed and batteries. here she is outside:

sorry for the pop quality of photos…using the old 1.3meg… just finished building battery packs, gonna try to get 'er done this weekend! cale

VERY nice. I need to build a better box like that for my Goose #6…Something that will fit all the batteries…

Looks like it’s coming along. Should be an enjoyable piece of equipment.

That looks good Cale. I gotta get me one of those.

Looks good with the added braces!

thanks guys! ----------------------------------------NEWS FLASH------------------------------------------- The NBRR announces the addition of a new “Hybrid” Rail Truck. This is the 2nd piece of Motive Power for the line to be converted from fossil fuel to battery power. In an effort to cut down on emissions(for no known reason), the Bachmann Rail Truck has been fitted with Twelve 1.2v AA NiMH cells and an RCS Basic 2… Control is provided by a RCS TX-24. Even more energy was conserved by carrying over the LED directional lighting. The Batteries and RCS Motor Driver (charging jack, and pwr switch) are installed in the custom built crate on the rear deck, and antenna is installed on the roof of the cab.

--------------------------------------- after running for a good while yesterday…I noticed a few things… 1. This unit Does Not Like Grades. I have some pretty steep grades on the Main, and while it can traverse them, it ain’t too happy. 2. The RT surges downhill. Not a RC(S) problem, but a driveline prob as discussed with Dave Goodson (TOC). there is soo much play in the u joint you are bound to have some surging. 3. The unit is a very smooth runner on level well laid track and runs along nicely…purring away. I believe it will make a nice addition to the line, esp when I get more track laid, and it will add some variety to the motive power. I may re-do the battery install and use a sub AA type to conserve space in the crowded ‘crate’. Until then, I have a Saddle Tank to complete… cale

Cale,

That’s what was missing, the extra braces!

A box that size would have 4x4s at the bottom.

Cale,

You’ve reported -

“1. This unit Does Not Like Grades. I have some pretty steep grades on the Main, and while it can traverse them, it ain’t too happy.”

I think the RGS complained about the same thing on the 1:1 model.

“2. The RT surges downhill. Not a RC(S) problem, but a driveline prob as discussed with Dave Goodson (TOC). there is soo much play in the u joint you are bound to have some surging.”

Sounds like the brakes are grabbing, try slowing it way down going down hills. You don’t want a broken drive shaft and then maybe a runaway. I’d suggest keeping your hand on or near the emergency brake when carrying such a large load.

Great project!

All of my railtrucks are Hybrids…they burn both gas AND oil…
