Bought a live steamer--pray for me

I just bought a Ruby at the ECLSTS. What a lot of fun, even though it runs like a lunatic. It either stalls on a mild grade, or speeds like a maniac and launches itself off the first curve. I’ve been reading a lot about Rubies and there is a ton of info out there.

So far I have “adjusted” the safety valve so it blows off at about 45 lbs, instead of 20, and added a road pilot to the front. I’m planning to add RC–otherwise I think it will be unusable on my layout. I plan to add a Goodall valve and to reverse the eccentrics, because it runs much better in reverse. I’ll probably make a tender to put the RC receiver in.

Oh and yes I burned my fingers

And running downhill, it’s even faster.

Congratulations! Enjoy.

For R/C I’d recommended looking at the new low-end Spektrum DX5e System Excellent 2.4GHz performance for under $100 + servos.

Needs a goodly load behind it to tame it a bit.

We had a kit-built ‘Ruby’ hauling 26 quarry skip wagons, looked good and sounded good, too.

After all the days since young Mike got his steam loco; has he yet tamed the beast !!!..?

It would be neat to hear of his latest “Water boiling/tea making” experiences.

Fred, he has!!! and a great success it was, but he’d better tell it here himself. Best, Zubi

Jon be careful. I think the Spektrum DX5e is only for airplane operation. The frequencies for airplane operation are illegal to be used for surface, Ground, vehicles.

Big John, this is 2.4GHz R/C, they share one frequency (2.4GHz) for air/surface/water. They digitally lock receiver and transmitter, so there is no danger of interference. Whether they are legal in your country is a different matter. Best, Zubi

Yes, What Zubi said. There is no difference in frequency from the ground Vs air raidos in the 2.4Gz band. Only difference is the style of transmitter and number of channels.

Many live steamers use the Dx5e.

Coulda left the eccentrics alone and made a cab-forward. That would be eccentric enough even for me.

Rubies are fdefinately fun locos ! R/C and a heavy load are right to controll them ! I have no r/c system on mine but three heavy gravel filled gondolas. Believe me , that helps !
