Large Scale Central

Bob were is Bob ???

It’s an easy trap to fall into, that everything that goes wrong for you gets magnified all out of proportion and everyone else is wrong, not you.

I have met a lot of people like that. One person even went off and acted like it was a conspiracy against him, personally, that wire sizes were listed in gauge and not diameter. All I can do is shake my head, and hope that I don’t become like that if I ever do grow up.

As for the financial thing. I am glad that there are people out there who can afford the products that I can’t. Maybe, someday, I will be able to afford some of the stuff I want, when they end up selling off their collection. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)But to be upset at other people because I didn’t choose to work in a better paying career, and I didn’t manage what money I did earn better then I did, is rather pointless. I don’t see where raising my blood pressure that way is going to gain me anything…

It is too bad some people get nutty over a hobby. Over the years we have had a few crazies on this site. I am sure glad most of them move on!

Run Bob Run!!!

People get nutty over all sorts of stuff…if it were only hobbies, well, that wouldn’t be SO bad…

You got that right!

…and some people get nutty about which religion is the correct one, and then there is politics…both don’t belong here PERIOD.

This is supposed to be a Large Scale, Model Railroad, interest web page. dedicated to good communication between ordinary human beings, in order to share thoughts, experiences, skills, friendship, knowledge, and EDUCATION.

Good communication starts with using good communication skills, which not everyone has at birth, but they can be learned, if there is a will to do so. An open mind helps too.

The first indication of a failing in communication, starts with a basic education in the knowledge of the English language, at least on this web page, as most of the participants here use it as their mother tongue.

…and it starts right here to fail, in the leading SUBJECT LINE of this thread…“WERE” is not “WHERE”…

The subject line should read; at least I’m guessing…should read…“Bob, where is Bob ?”

So I’m pointing this out, knowing full well, that someone will jump in declaring that "No-one cares…we all know what is meant…so go park yourself somewhere, and don’t bother us with facts…

Fred Mills

Gee Fred, if everyone were perfect, how boring would that be? You’d have nothing to complain about…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Bad grammar and spelling is one of the main reasons a lot of youngsters sending in a CV do not obtain jobs requiring literacy these days… teaching or journalist )…although some slip through the net ( e.g see UK Daily Mail newspaper!! ) (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)One thing that really gripes me is Buy 1 - get one FOR free .

but luckily we are not job hunting here, but just for staying in contact with other choo-choo loving nutcases.

i, at least, am most interested in modeling. and the pics that others post of their models have perfect grammar and ortografy.??? spelling.

(edit: well, with exception of those, that were drowned in the bucket…)

Fred, you failed to state where a typo belongs in your complaint about education, spellng and grammar (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)Few of us hd any education using a computer keyboard, and (as far as I recall) this website s/w does not allow you to edit the Subject line! So one typo and you are an uneducated lout? I think we can all relax the rules of spelling and grammar until Bob lets us fix our typos.

While I personally believe that bad grammar and spelling mistakes DISTRACT you from the intended communication (and this has been proven over and over again), I don’t believe Fred called anyone a “lout”.

And indeed, you SHOULD be able to change the subject line of a thread, but you can email Bob to do it.

But the real reason I am posting is this from Fred:

" This is supposed to be a Large Scale, Model Railroad, interest web page. dedicated to good communication between ordinary human beings, in order to share thoughts, experiences, skills, friendship, knowledge, and EDUCATION."

I strongly disagree with “education”… yes, we learn from other’s experiences, but nowhere on this forum have I ever felt it was a place to share our EDUCATION… I have several college degrees, but they really don’t mean a rat’s patoot unless they help understand or fix a problem, or lead to a solution.

In real life I know 2 engineers, one is a PHd and the other basically went only to a city college, no advanced degree. Surprise! The city college guy is 10 times the engineer the snooty PHd is…

So, sure I notice spelling errors, both my parents were teachers, but it’s at worst a minor distraction, not worth calling someone out and then saying they are not following the mandate of “sharing education”…

OK, I’ll get off the soapbox.

Greg

I disagree here as well. Education to me is something that is formally imparted, Grade School, High School, etc. I prefer to think in terms of knowledge and wisdom. I was taught that knowledge is what you learn through your own ‘skinned knuckles’. Wisdom is what you learn from other’s ‘skinned knuckles’. I would like to think that here is a place where we share stories of how we gained knowledge skinning our knuckles and shared that as wisdom to others.

…and Greg, I’ll bet the farm that the city college boy has far more scars on his knuckles that the PhD will ever enjoy.

Yea, I have a an Associates degree, and have marveled at college educated folks that don’t understand the basics in our field.

As for spelling and grammar, I have always had an issue with those things. Spelling, because when I went to school, there was no screening for dyslexia. It was only later in life that I discovered that have some form of dyslexia. Grammar was difficult for me, because as a child, I was exposed to my grandparents’ cousins and brothers and sisters a lot. Being as the family was of strong German decent, proper sentence structure and grammar was something I was taught in school, but didn’t hear outside of school.

I do agree that many internet posts, all over the internet, would be easier to read and understand, if the poster had done a little bit of proofreading. But in this fast paced society, taking the time to reread a post, and see if it actually makes sense, is something that isn’t done quite as often as it should be. And then add in a simple typo, and maybe a slang expression, and deciphering what was actually meant by a post can be a challenge. More then once I have responded to a post, only to be told that I misinterpreted the post. After rereading the post in question, do I see what the original intent probably was. One of the added challenges with the written word, is there is no audio component to it. So one cannot hear if the person is joking, mad, confused, or whatever.

All of this because Bob has had to leave us to our own devices and take a job further from his home.

Ah well…I look at it the same as when teacher leaves the class…mayhem!!..all good fun… but I don’t think we should get too serious and carried away!(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Think I will do some model work…building a vacuum former…that should keep me occupied for some time. I mean…what could possibly go wrong with some wood…a few screws and some glue?..

I was a newspaper editor for 30 years and not even reporters know spelling and grammar anymore!

I trained as a journo on a newspaper in the late forties and woebetide the man or woman that managed to get a spelling wrong even tho it was a typo.

The chief sub junior was one of the old school. Winged collar…dark tie…black suit covered in cigarette ash…and the yell was BOY! He frightened me to death… I left and joined the Royal Navy ( Fleet Arm) and visited the old place on leave. I eventually Imarried the art dept fashion artist - - 63 yrs ago…
