I was working on the layout this morning and heard a sudden commotion behind me in the lower part of the yard. Turned around in time to see our neighborhood blue jay take off with one of our lizards in his beak! I wasn’t aware that they ate lizards, although it’s not too surprising since they also raid the nests of other birds.
There are two jays which come to our house regularly, usually they hang out in the front yard because that’s where we feed them peanuts. Lately only one has been coming, I suspect the other is a female and is currently sitting on a nest somewhere.
The (presumably) male jay has started coming to see me in the back yard lately when I’m working on the layout, apparently hoping I’ll feed him. I hadn’t expected him to go after the lizards.
