Birth of an Engine

A member of the FEBT posted this on the EBT List. Its quite a movie.

“A neat 1928 movie on loco construction which
came up on rypn.org. It shows the operation of several machine tools
similar to those of the EBT (albeit in a slightly larger scale).
Rollers, planer, forging hammer, wheel lathe, casting, leaf springs, fire
rings.”

Wow. Thanks.

Thanks Ric, that’s a jewel for sure.

The Building of a Transcontinental Railway in Canada (W. Butcher and Sons, 1909)

Witness the impressive construction of a section of the Grand Trunk Railway linking Winnipeg, Manitoba and Prince Rupert, B.C.

Heck, this one is just as good. Looks like they are running over the rail before it is spiked down. I guess that could be done with a engine equipped with the wheels with a flange on both sides. Looks like a Shay pushing the tie and rail unloader. I guess that would semi gauge the track, also. Lot’s of speculation in trying to see and interpret what is going on.
