For several years now, I have been collecting bird houses, typically on sale price at OHS stores, so when I get the point of landscaping my outdoor layout, I will put them out, though with some mods to plug the round bird access holes and maybe add LED interior lighting.

I had a few of them some years ago when the RR was on the ground around my pond area. Had to seal them with Thompson’s Water Seal yearly, but the sun eventually breaks them down, they usually would last 3-4 years, before parts would start falling off of them.

Even after sealing well with polyurethane ours barely lasted a year. The ones we have now do not stay outside and we use them mostly for shows.

My experience has been they are temporary! In a year or two they rot away no matter how you try to protect them. I am replacing mine with commercially obtained plastic buildings or scratch-building structures using PVC. YMMV depending on climate. Florida is very wet and hot, so that promotes rot. In a desert climate they may last a lot longer.
I have many of the bird feeders form various places . I have found them at WalMart, Tractor Supply, pet stores. I even found 2 different Gazebos.
I filled the bottom with gravel and cut off the hanging cable.
Some have been outside for 7 years and stand up to the New England weather real well.
Note… I never paid more than $15 for any of these and sometimes on sale under $8.

I think maybe the “feeders” are made from solid wood like ceder or redwood? The ones I have used are made of thin plywood.

These are nice, they are UV protected plastic, I purchased a few of them.
As Mike stated, these feeders are plastic NOT wood and last longer than the piko houses I have and are thick walled like the Pola buildings!!!

Not a bird house per-se, but Wall Station began life as a craft store unfinished wood “project” structure. Seen here in as purchased configuration in grey primer…
And after up-scale / upgrade just before installation on the RR…

Joe, I mentioned the feeders were made of UV protected plastic. Quoting on here is an exercise in futility trying to get the quote in a box by itself, and the answer separate.

The trick is to scroll down (in the reply box) and place your cursor to the far lower left, click and when it stays off to the left, you are low enuf.

In the Menard’s sale paper that came out this week, they have the Feeders on sale for $14.99. They’re showing the lighthouse, but it says assorted styles.
I put an old Lionel revolving light inside, minus the revolving dome.
