👷🏼‍♂️Bill’s 2025 MIK Challenge

I’ve been concerned about posting anything since my printer jammed up.

However, I just realised as I looked at my napkin & refined plans, that I could complete my build.

TADA!

That’s getting close to best save Bill.

Wondering what’s in the can on the right, and if it’s related to Erics refreshment…

Cheers

I thought I should include a couple of unwrapped photos to finish off this thread.

Thanks for all those shots Bill, and your handcar is wonderful. So much detail! Does it actually work, when you push the handle?

I enjoy seeing all those boilers, because they help me see I’m not the only one to have a number of background prints for each one I show. Nice job.

Thanks Cliff,

I’m not that skilled. I can’t take credit for the original hand car and steam engine design, only the modifications. To answer your question, the gear fit was perfect and I suspect it could be made to work in resin. But then… who would be moving it around the layout?

I’m glad you appreciated the Trial & Error photo display. I really enjoy the fact that I can make multiple versions of things on the printer at relatively reasonable costs. Comparing my tiny MIK entry to the amazing projects that others accomplished in the same time, that group photo was a nice reminder that I had something happening on most days of the challenge. (At least until the Great Printer Jam of 2025)

Before the printer packed up, I had 2 versions to test; one using acrylic paint as a filler, and the other using the new Arcane setting that allows the printer to spit out a bit more plastic in critical locations (where 1 pass of the nozzle is not enough but 2 is too much).

I found that the modelling putty set up too quickly and I had to file off the excess after it fully set, otherwise it smeared more. I’ll be trying the thick acrylic paint as theoretically I might be able to clean the surroundings with a damp cloth as I go.

My replacement printer part arrived from Europe yesterday, so testing will begin soon.

Bill, you’ve done a wonderful job with the Mik contest. Different folks will have their differing interpretations of, and emphases on, what the contest is all about, and I respect them all. But FWIW, your effort reflects my interpretation: using your imagination to set a target, and the tools and supplies at hand to accomplish it. So in my book, you nailed it. Great job!

Cheers, dude!

Here’s the little bastard that brought the Mik-tacular to an abrupt end.

Well tomorrow is the day for reassembly.
