Fri nite there was a big UP coal train derailment on their main line(3 tracks) at Josslyn Mill, 3 miles east of Lexington, NE. About 40 cars, but hard to tell they were so smashed up and equipment was all over. About 30 UPsemis were parked along Hwy 30, they brought in the heavy equipment. A train was waiting with about 30 flat car loads of rail pads attached to ties and some ballast cars. Gonna take awhile!
WoW! Those aluminum (?) cars sure crumble up when they crash.
Damn.
Jon.

Thanks Jerry for the interesting pics.
Jerry,
Thanks for posting the shots. Very interesting. Quite the mess.
Ralph
What a mess. I wonder what caused it?
Thanks for the pics.

I thinkit was more than two cents!
Nice pictures.
18 hours after it happened they had one track going, then a couple of hours later a second. I guess the 3d could be open tomorrow, based on this. Amazing work.
Ran back over this morning, tracks are open but trains go by pretty slowly. THey have their track machinery parked there, will be working on it some I’m sure. Still cleaning up some.

Trains still rolling by slowly.

Coal anyone? Empty coal train rolling back west to Wyoming to get another load.
Shucks, I could have used a couple pieces on the layout! Actually we have an antique parlor stove that burns coal!
For all of you that model standard gauge with diesels and coal trains this might be an idea for a photo on your layout. Of course you will have to destroy several coal cars to get the shot…

Hmm. Thought Marx Trains went out of business…
Good eye Joe, had not seen that!
Jerry,
Kind of addictive to watch the clean up isn’t it? We had a big one on the BNSF by my son’s house a couple of years a go. They fiddled with it for almost 6 months.
Reason for the slow trains must make the track safe and get it to the class of track that was present before the derailment. So for now slow ordered. One thing about Hultcher they can clean up a mess in a hurry of course they are not cheap. Was 10 grand per hr do not know what it is now. Then also it was based on the pieces of equipment they brought. Later RJD
All the semi’s had UP symbols on them, thought it was UP doing it.
Back to John’s comment: “…this might be an idea for a photo on your layout. Of course you will have to destroy several coal cars to get the shot…” What about a backdrop photo for your layout? Jerry, What I was thinking about would be a panorama of shots patched together similar to this one:

but without the tracks, loader and generator/light pole. No need to destroy your models. UP has already provided the 1:1 wreckage for the backdrop panorama. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Joe Satnik
