I have heard that the mechanics of the Bachmann Big Hauler 4-6-0 has improved over the years. Now that I am electrifying some of my rails I want to put one of the two I have on the rails but I don’t know which one is “better” mechanically. One has S.P.C. on the tender and the other is Rio Grande Southern. The fromt pilot on the RGS got stuck in a switch and broke so that needs repaired but which one is better mechanically?
Turn it over and look for a “bump” on the back of the chassis by the rear axle. It is a bump out for the gear.
No bump…original BH. Not good.
Center bump… Better
Off set bump…Best.
Pardon my lack of technical lingo.
This should be right but may not cover all the variations.

I have one too. Stalls out (track power) in places where my other locos have no problems.
Rewired it, didn’t help a bit.
I’d like to get a BBT drive for it one day.

Doug,
There were 3 generations in flat-bottom BHs.
First was the Battery powered,
Second the first track power. Neither of these is a runner.
The third generation was Labeled PLUS. The achilles heel was that the motor moved and chewed up the cluster gear.
There is a method to correct this involving a long wire tie around the weight and around the motor to hold it in place. If you want the instructions send me an email.
Then the bumps started.

Like sexing kittens. You turn them over and look between the rear drivers.
Have you ever tried to put a cat on it’s back? I’ll stick with an engine! Thanks.
hehe
Many years ago, I was rather interested in a Mennonite girl. In the early 80’s, when farmers were going broke everywhere, the area Mennonites weren’t. We were going to a Fall thing, and I was a little early picking her up. “Oh, Tom. Good, you’re early. We have a job to do. Dad says there are too many kittens around here.” She caught the dominate tomcat, wrapped him up in a big towell, said, “Hold him tight!” Took out her pocket knife and… um… rendered him ineffective, not to mention very upset.
Sounds like a girl I’d like to date. NOT!
I guess that was a hint to let you know how those folks would handle you if you got out of line. Just saying.
Friends always told me what to do when the boy arrived to pick up my daughter for a date.
I should be sitting on the front porch, cleaning my shotgun. “What time are you bringing her home, son?”

That sounds like a song I have heard!
I had a wife that tried that once. I was lucky and got away…She’s an ex-wife now…
I never did see Melvin’s gun collection. I’m told all the boyfriends did.
Bobbit’s cousin did that, and missed now they prosecuted her for a “misderweiner” Hah LOL Regal
