Big Boy schedule

Busted…

Well, not really - you wouldn’t let the pressure “die off” But if the loco is drifting [idling along] it won’t use much oil and water. Let the Diesel do some work for its living!

Now that was tricky.

I kind of oversimplified what I was thinking. They don’t need to maintain enough pressure to blow the safeties while drifting, but keep enough that if they need power, it’s there. Basically just less fire.

That’s certainly one way to do it, haha!!

I happen to know the answer to this one. Power generation cars.

Thanks Devon. Holy cow those passenger cars are amazing!

  • How many kilometres is your trip up to now?

  • Can we assume herself has been enticed to come along so you can focus on Navigation and posting to the LSC?

If not, I’m thinking how I might approach it…

Me: “Honey, how do you feel about taking a little road trip? Not just any road trip, but a mission of epic proportions. I’m talking about seeing the legendary Big Boy steam locomotive on an excursion run!”

Herself: “Wait, you want me to drive somewhere to see a train? And we don’t even get to ride it, or see bears?”

Me: “Yes, but think of it this way: this is the kind of train that makes Thomas the Tank Engine look like a toy. It’s the Daniel Craig [007] of trains, except it’s bigger, louder, and way more impressive. And no one has to deal with TSA lines or baggage claims! It’s the perfect get-away!”

Herself: “Uh-huh…”

Me: “Picture this: cruising down the open road, you and me, windows down, wind in our hair. It’s like ‘Thelma & Louise,’ but with a much happier ending and no cliffs.”

(Apologies @Cliff_Jennings; just not sure how it would work with a third wheel :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:… and Devon does have a reputation of being the Emperor of Romance)

Herself: “So we’re going to drive… to see… a train… and not ride on it?”

Me: “Absolutely! And imagine the LSC posting possibilities. #DevoningBigBoyTrainSpottingGoals will be trending, thanks to us. Plus, you’ll be the envy of all our friends. Who else gets to see the Big Boy in action?”

Herself: “I do like a good LSC post… It allows me to get things done around here, while you spend hours reading them”

Me: “And think of the adventure! Every great love story has a road trip. We’ll find quirky diners, maybe a bizarre roadside attraction or two; possibly a quilting store in a town with a (uh) hobby shop… It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey and the memories we’ll make along the way.”

Herself: “Alright, you got me at quilting shop. Let’s go see this Big Boy, big boy.”

Wow sounds like a second honeymoon. But sadly no she is not going. She has a prior engagement. Buy to be fair to her she would in a minute. It’s not hard at all to get her to go on a road trip. This trip will be me and Pepper

You’re too much, Bill! Love it!

Yeah, Daniel Craig or… John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger of locos…

If it’s a rolling stag party for one, you might consider a parallel tour…

Free tastings eh?
Sounds like a parallel tour is a no brainer, Cliff.

Good advice as always!

With my Herself, it’s always yarn stores… I got some serious bonus points a couple years ago when she was with me in Nevada and I had a list of addresses for such and a free day for us to visit them.

Cliff, That explains why you’re so good at spinning a yarn… 🥸

If you ever go to Canada you need to take herself here Mary Maxim

Best gift I ever gave my MIL (similar one, as I didn’t know about this pattern at the time). The jumper weighs more than a Christmas Turkey. Apparently she learned to curse whilst making it, as the wool is that heavy.

Disappointingly she has not been open to my offer to get her this pattern…

Sounds to me like I skip the big boy and just go on the tour instead. Whiskey is the key to this man’s heart.

Speaking of whiskey. It’s not often I buy expensive top shelf whiskey. But when I do I am picky. One of my favorites is Jefferson’s. I live their “Jefferson’s Ocean” which is an aged whiskey in barrels soaked in salt water. It’s delightful. But I also love their rye. But they have a new product, Jefferson’s Tropical which is some damn thing that I still don’t know what the purpose is, but I bought a 90 dollar bottle. It’s not good. Not at all smooth, nothing special about the flavor, and is overall a disappointment.

Whoa!

Somebody’s hijacked Devon’s Large Scale Central Account!

Sorry, maybe not…

Oh now that is seriously cool. Anyone that feels the need to send me a birthday present contact Bill…

One of my bucket list scratch builds is a functional charred oak cask car that hold about a pint of whiskey. Brings a whole new meaning to a whistle stop. . .wet my whistle.

In the mean time you could reletter this for some ops practice…

Better yet, the LGB 4047 is more, er, to the point of your post, as it has a valve and drinking tube.

At last, we’ve brought this thread back to a meaningful large scale topic!
