Just watched Modern Marvels on the History Channel. Subject was Locomotives and included a bit of history of locomotive types although mostly devoted to modern diesels and high speed rail.
The first five minutes or so described the workings of the steam locomotive and that’s where the blooper occurred. An animation described how steam went from the steam dome to the cylinders to power the locomotive. Only problem was they showed steam coming from the sand dome instead. The other dome located to the rear of the dome depicted clearly had the whistle and safety valves attached to it and therefore was the actual steam dome. If they ever needed a safety valve on a sand dome it’s news to me. hehe!
Did anyone else catch it? If you get the chance check it out.
Aside from the all too obvious blooper it was a good program describing EMD and CSX diesel ops, diesel technology, mining locomotives, Panama Canal “mules” and even mag-lev trains. It’s a shame such a glaring error was overlooked in what was otherwise an excellent presentation.
This type of thing is becoming more and more prevalent as we get farther away from the days of operating steam power.
