Large Scale Central

Between conversions, finished some of my own

My new 1:20 side-tank Bachmann Porter has been in service for a couple of months on radio/battery.
Has the speaker, volume control, but no sound board.
Sound order came in, so in it went!
Funny, that little engine with sound…

Then, I decided it was TIME.

So, since I had a spare throttle laying on the bench, and a sound systm, I dug out my K-27!

Took a bit of doing, but I track-tested it this morning and it runs NICE!
Had to fix #1 and #4 driver gauge and the pilot truck…hammer and screwdriver.

But, it’s no longer so narrow it jumps at turnouts.
Hopefully tomorrow I can take some photos if it’s not raining.

Just finished the backup light.
Some moron had a nice cast brass light glued to the tender deck on the Fireman’s side.
Since it’s lettered 463, I made the 4-legged mount of brass, painted it, mounted it (after drilling the appropriate hole in the bottom for a bulb), mounted the brake wheel assembly I had to make (the brass wheel is a yellow-sheet Trackside Details from when Pete was alive).

Nice and quiet.

Oh, it’s a 1:22.5 Magnus.

With all that rain Washington is getting you have time at the workbench! What happened to winter rain?
Were you able to squeeze the sound and battery into the Porter?

Hmmmmm....I have not seen a real rain storm in many weeks....:/ The State of Eastern Washington is bone dry..:( And my grass shows it.

Had about 45 minutes of what we used to call a “gully washer” last night. Now we call it “gutter cleaners”.

First revenue run on Steven’s Canyon Trestle.

Working upgrade to the tank at Mehus siding.

Freshly watered, barking out of Mehus.

Pounding up the grade to Frost with the scheduled passenger run.

Nice Engine and Pike. What type of track are you using?

Originally MicroEngineering.
Long story, but never again.
Found Llagas many years ago, all re-alignments, branches, entire lower end is Lalgas.
Upper end is 250, branches are 215 aluminum.

Wow, Dave. You’re right, that fits right in with the rest of the rolling stock.

While it is the wrong “scale” to the “gauge”, it is a graphic illustration to the unbelievers that in some instance it makes one helluva difference.

Even hauling those coaches behind a Bachmann 2-8-0 shows the size discrepancy.
But, since everything being hauled is 1:22.5, as is the loco, it “works”.

I want that loco!!!
Wherdyuh get it!!!
'Been looking for a 1:22.5 for a long, long, long, time!

“Magnus” is made in Germany by Christian Höhne. You can look at the fine RGS K-27, I guess it is “price on request”

Be prepared to shell out major money!

A little over three years ago I had need of a couple of parts for this.
The owner had all the tooling, made them for me.
My understanding via a middle-man was that these have been out of production for almost 20 years.

Does the weblinque indicate he will do them on demand?

As far as cost, I think these were $3500 US back then.

$35 hunnert, huh? :frowning: :frowning:
TOC, yer one lucky $%#@&^$

That is NOT what I paid for it.
And, it was pretty bad when I got it.

Yo Jon - please note that many parts on Magnus locos are, or seem to be, pretty soft and fragile castings a bit like the material that toy soldiers are made from. And when they break from pretty average day-to day handling they cannot be repaired.

Put me off in very short order with a G1 loco a while back, pretty cheap but ‘in need of slight repairs…’.

Super glue.
That’s what they seem to be put together with in some areas anyway.

I had a broken whistle arm.
Turned the solder station down to about the lowest heat and re-sculped it together.

Find them “cheap” and needing work, that’s the way to get them.
The boiler supports were broken, got cast brass Trackside units.
Various needed bits from the same source.

Heck, if you can find one, and nobody else makes them, get it!

Sigh …:frowning: :frowning:
More junk, Huh?

In 22.5 all there seems to be is LGB/Aster. On e-bay once in a while.
And the new KISS model, never to make its debut, and at prolly 35 or 40 hunnert, out of my price range anywho.

^%$#$%^&

Ebay LGB/Aster

Super Glue is right! Way back in the Dark Ages when I looked at Biggie Trains like over-blown toys, a Toronto dealer had a “special order” Magnus 1:22.5 NA diesel in the store.
The customer was “less than happy” - which obviously couldn’t have been as bad as HJ having a regular fit at shoddy workmanship   - and the “beauty” was a-waiting Mr. Höhne’s annual visit.
Too many pieces “getting unstuck”! Well I just shook my head - SuperGlue in Germany! What a blooming concept!  The price gotta be just right to buy Magnus!

Tweaked a crankpin today, set a siderod, yesterday added a .040" shim at the smokebox saddle (I think there was one and it disappeared in the big crash before I got it), touched up some paint, lubed some dry spots, and it’s smoooooooth!

Most if not all of this was shipping-damage related many years ago, followed by “repairs” by someone who was a bit clueless.
Quite impressive, and, unlike a certain brass K-27, this one goes through all the uprights on my turntables, and fits on them all, even the shortest one.

Got to see this run yesterday, first hand. Great work TOC. Looks and Runs top notch.

Sheeesh Dave,

When are you going to invite that Bouck guy for an op session? Isn’t it time that he gets to see a 1:22.5 K-27, but make sure to install the drip sheets in case he drools.
