Better late than never - CVSRy prepares for winter

Winter has been officially here for several weeks now, but you couldn’t prove it by looking at the ground or the thermometer. Before last week we didn’t even have a consistent freeze at night so some of the hardy plants and grasses were still growing. This weather has done nothing for the sense of urgency felt by the CVSRy yard and MOW crews in getting the plow train set and tuned up. Last weekend was the first time the plow train has turned a wheel since early spring 2015. Today the boys had it out on the line to check clearances in the snow shed the MOW boys just erected.

Here the train has passed through the snow shed. This train will have a rear plow for snow service as soon as it’s released from the electrical shop…

Just enough clearance…

The shed is needed to prevent ice on the rails caused by this overhang…

We never want a repeat of this scene…

We’re ready for winter here too. Got plenty of firewood…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Great snow shed! Looks functional and gives a great shot of the “expansion area”.

Hmm, I didn’t think of that ice build up when I decided that was where to cut in the switch. Maybe I need to design a heated switch (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Good idea. I think we both had winter n our minds. I just put the no winter maintenance sign up on the interior line.

I’m surprised that you didn’t put a sign that said : Caution area maintained by " Rooster"

We are supposed to get some perfect snow late tomorrow afternoon. About 1-2 inches of dry fluffy snow. Plow train is all set up with super bright LED Plow Lights on both ends. It will be cold, but should be easy and fun to clear when I get home after dark.

Jon,

We will want video! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I just put a spotlight on my house over the layout. It should allow me to do some night running. If I dont get out after work to plow, Im off tomorrow and with the temps staying cold it should still be good tomorrow for me to plow.

My video camera needs a new battery so it’s dead for now. Besides, if we actually do get the snow it will be way too dark by the time I get home to do any video or pictures. I just got asked to stay late at work tonight too.

I did cover the first 8 feet of track coming out of the basement so I can run the plow train outside to cool.

Snow fizzled - barely a dusting. Would look nice with a train in the daylight, but nothing to plow. Crew has been released.

We ended up with an inch here. Winds last night blew the snow off the rails. Going to try and run a train before I go skiing.

Track was barely covered when the light came up this morning. Didn’t need a plow but would have looked good with a train, Needed to go to work instead of play.

A good two inches here, But rather run on my micro in my garage. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Picked up another half inch this morning and still snowing.
