I am a returning model railroader. I sought to come back to the hobby after being without it for 40+ years. I was in the military and retired, so I never had the room for building and kept my hand in railroading by hiking into old railroad logging camps and visiting old train sites for years.
A few years ago I finally bought a house and settled down and was looking to build something or get a hobby. Before that happened my house burned down and I am living in a nice but temporary house until my house is rebuilt again (soon now). While waiting I ran into this site and decided TRAINS!!
Now I don’t have a garden railroad, but I am going to build one, so I stay on here and pick up details and build stuff when I can. The folks on here are really great (and a little nuts too) and helpful. I am making some great mistakes like I never did before, but it is fun and keeps me busy. 
This site does not have Gatekeepers that I have found, but I have been on some sites that I shy away from. So that’s it!

I don’t like gates myself I just prefer to roam freely .
This site has had a few but like in all good gardens, weeds eventually get pulled. 
Sorry to hear about the loss of your home but a new one will be fun to make your own.
Keep us posted on your progress, especially the new railroad.
