Large Scale Central

Behavior on forums, and how it affects others

And that’s the thing with the written word. Many will read it and many will interpret it differently. The problem is when we can’t get off out high horse and admit one way or the other that we were misunderstood, or god forbid you were wrong. Then, as always, we end up with this mess. if I was Bob i’d shut the site down and find more peaceful things to do with my time, like model railroading.

Terry

Let me say this. As a general rule, I write just like I talk. Don’t try to read into it what isn’t there.

I was reading his diatribes in that thread, and when he jumped down my throat, I gave him ample warning.

Back.

Off.

This is Bob’s living room. Somebody comes into MY living room acting and spouting like that, I’d have escorted them out the door.

However, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and all the information I thought he could use on why this isn’t something he should pursue…without saying so…“vintage”, “rare”, “collectible” old Bmann large scale.

With a whole lot of specifics.

Well, I wasn’t talking about you Dave, but for people that haven’t talked to you personally your typing can come across as harsh.

Back on the porter subject, $30 for us unwashed masses isn’t a bad price. If I was looking for one and got it for that price I would be happy. Now, if there was a disclaimer with it that said Call Dave Goodson before buying I’d give you a shout take your advice and decide from there. You’re a name in the large scale world but not everyone knows you. So, to those that don’t, you’re just a guy beating on him for paying $30 for a porter on ebay.

I don’t have a dog in this fight. I see both sides and both of you are right and wrong.

I apologize for starting this. Obviously the internet is not the right place to discuss such controversial things as model trains. Bob, do whatever you want, ban me, whatever, for starting this; I should have known better.

Nah, not your fault. Things just happen. To demonstrate how ridiculous all this is, I’ll tell y’all how much I paid for my Bmann Porter… $50, now if Dave tells me I overpaid my reply is: "Oh OK I’ll keep that in mind next time. ". How hard is that?

I’m really perturbed at how readily people get bent out of shape when they should just relax and try not to take anything said on here personally because 99% of the time it’s not intended to be such.

Depends. Does yours have metal siderods and hex bolt crankpins? Not bad. Parts available. They actually run fairly decently (except for some that wobble badly).

Fifty bucks for a metal siderod engine isn’t bad. If I needed one, badly, I’d probably pay that if a box of stuff didn’t show up with one in it.

BIG DIFFERENCE between the one in question and later metal rod units.

HUGE.

TOC

Yep metal side rods, last model at 1/22.5 the one with the good front axle design that tracks better on bad track

Hee hee, yes Robbie you should have,
In a pissing match there is only one place to stand and that is well back from the line

Robbie,

It wasn’t you at all.

Man, oh man…I’m sorry I missed all of this!!

TOC, as far as i’m concerned, you can keep telling me like it is…if my Tsunami sound card that came in my Bachmann Shay is nothing but a doorstop…guess what where mine is right now?? :)…but I do need my batteries!!

I guess when its all said and done…this is a hobby that should be enjoyed and shared with each other. I’ve so much admiration for those of you that have “already been there” before me and that have offered such solid advice. My railroad continues to grow with some success because of the information held within these forums…

To me, there is some much more in the real world to be upset about…

My 2 cents!!

I think someone needs to come down from their Throne. If I was to purchase a item and was happy with it, why should other people tell me I was wrong. Come on it was only 30 bucks. You cant even buy a decent lunch for two with that. Jeez.

Wow! Where do YOU live?

Here that’s a month’s wage for a hard-working farmhand, up at midnight to get some work done the light of the moon before the sun comes up and then, after working all day, into his bed by midnight.

Then, up at midnight…

Gee whiz, you guys sure do have life easy, eh?

Hey, that ‘wobble’ is part of that ol’ narra gage charm - don’t knock it!

some things did spring to my mind, when i read these posts here.

first - in retrospekt, i don’t understand, how i managed to have fun in the largescalehobby in the hard years from '70 to '94 without access to the internet and the valuable guidance by the experienced largescale-celebrities.

second - after it is now well established, (for the umteenth time), that there never is any unfriendliness, arrogance or patronizing involved, we should let this thread rest in peace…

… and open another thread, where we all together try to find out, why there are so few newcomers to the largescale forums.

As with any “community,” there are comparative “elders,” or whatever you want to call them, that have actual experience-based knowledge. When they take the time to answer a newbie’s question, in detail, the latter should have at least some respect for the response. Not boot-licking, not cow-towing, but rather a little politeness, a listening ear, and maybe some circumspection.

So I reread this and ruminated on this all day, and the summary of what I got was: (Cliff’s Notes Version)

Narrow Gauge is

Cliff,

No argument about having some respect for your elders, and I haven’t read the whole thread.

Q: how is a “newbie” supposed to know that the dude posting all these (possibly unwelcome) comments is actually a respected veteran ? If you haven’t been around as long as we have, you’d have no idea that TOC knows what he is talking about, even if he doesn’t sugar-coat any of it.

Pete, the individual in question was only new to us. He migrated here from “that other place.” He knew who Dave is.

After doing some far more interesting things since my last visit yesterday…I have been reminded of others who came, asked, were told, and we had this exact, same scenario.

I remember one by name.

I remember another one…I think it was GR…who was bound and determined to use his botch tin track out of doors…was really quite abusive…no amount of “you really don’t want to do this”, and “don’t go buying it for big bucks on evilbait”.

Then he claimed he couldn’t buy a decent lunch…oh, wait…claimed he was a metal coatings engineer, and he was going to mix up some concoction to coat them AND use it out of doors with track power.

Attitudinal Deficiencies are something I can spot. Maybe others cannot.

But boy, I’ve seen that before.

TOC

“…. to hold them to the wheels…I didn’t have the heart to tell him what I’ve paid for those, which is zero. …”

Yeah some people have the ‘contacts’ and the majority of us do not !

“…That gear goes, you have scenery.

Interim ya get to enjoy seeing it running on the track, which is way more than the “scenery” that we all pay $$$ in the form of (ex. over-priced die-cast) vehicles and other g-gauge flavoured infrastructure. Probably a lot of people have paid waaay more for a known dead loco’ just to be used as “scenery” under a bridge, or in a engine house …

nite

Hi Pete,

That was exactly the question that I had (though you framed it better), and tried to answer in my 2nd and 3rd and 4th paragraphs. But when I realized that i didn’t have an answer, I just deleted all that part.

All I’d suggest is time. Time to develop the relationships, learn who is who, that kind of thing. And time to re-read what others posted.

CJ

No. 1, I don’t get into it on a “public form”, why because it is public and forever! I do vent to the TOC when I see him and discuss things with him.

No.2. I don’t read every post because it is some thing I’m not interested in. If I do respond, as I did today. I try to give some info to the one asking.

No. 3, If you would not say it in Church, don’t say it here. That’s Bob job!

Look at the left-hand side of the post - pay attention to the post count…if it’s in triple figures, that’s a fairly serious poster. On the other claw, if it’s in four figures, that’s a pretty darn serious poster, and if it’s getting on for FIVE figures, well, he prolly taught Mr Lionel all he knows…

Mind you, I’ve cunningly dodged making any comment on the contents of these multifarious postings.
