I know there are a few diesel fans lurking here. The Fairbanks Morse H-10-44 & H-12-44 units were unique in that they were powered with submarine diesels. Two crankshafts, one top, one bottom, with two opposed pistons in each cylinder. These diesels have a unique sound and run very smooth. I think top RPM was around 500. They like to use this unit to pull the train at Spencer. It seems to be a favorite of some of the engineers. Ralph That’s my nephew, Brandon.
Cool. Nice looking loco. I didn’t know that submarine diesels were so different – and I sure didn’t know they ever use 'em in trains.
Ray, All sorts of engines are used in all sorts of things. Tucker used a flat 6 air cooled helicopter engine, converted to have fully sealed water cooling, in his beautiful creation.

Ralph, they had that one in the RH yesterday, truly a beauty!

GP something???I think, no cab rides yesterday? only ran twice while we were there and once while we were on it…Mostly consist of N&W (again, I think)…it was cold!

That is a very pretty engine, even if it’s a diesel
I’ll have to admit that my stable is just about evenly split between steam and diesel. I was born during the transition, but don’t really remember seeing any mainline steam. My dad was into new technology and took us to watch airplanes, not trains. I’ve always enjoyed trains and what I remember from my youth are diesels. My love of steam, and narrow gauge, came later in life.
I like all trains.
We used to climb all over the cars in the rail yards as kids.
Steam is cool for some of the same reasons that buildings hundreds of years old are cool.

Probably this little gem, GP-9. I haven’t had the pleasure of riding in this cab. Sure would like to. Ralph
