Hmmm, it’s hardly likely to be models of the size that WE associate with so-called ‘large-scale trains’ - more likely to be 5" or 7 1/4" gauge of some kind- especially as the victim appears to have been trapped underneath the loco for a while. My diesel switcher, a simple little 0-6-0 MoW loco, weighs over 650 pounds - that falling on you is going to really sting.
The problem is with the press is that they do not understand the term ‘model train’ - what they REALLY mean is ‘miniature railway’ which is what ride-on sized models like this are called.
In any case, it’s pretty hard on the old boy, I sure hope that he gets better soon and back on tracks.

I read the headline and got the mental image of some joker trying to ride on his Big Hauler, I’m sure someone has tried to.
Yeah when the dateline is somewhere in the UK I never exclude any of the very many possibilities.
I guess “the wife” will have to supervise him from now on.
Should be thankful it was not live steam…

To dispel any false ideas of lunacy this newspaper article does clarify things a little and to be trapped obviously suggests something larger was involved than the models usually gracing this Forum.
It may well have been live steam: nothing about how the train was moved is mentioned in any reports I have seen. As Terry mentions I hope he is soon back running his railway.

That’s the problem with the hyphenated Canadians, in my case the Swiss came to the fore.
We have a live steamer near us that we ride during their open houses. When we cross some of their trestles I often worry that someone will lean over taking a picture and take us for a “ride.”

Yep. The open house we missed this year. Joe from the club that was at Fairplex and his neighbor that was there went!
That railroad is really nice. Owned by a retired Glendale cop. Member and past president of L.A. Live Steamers.
Those trestles are really scary! The last time I was there, I was having trouble with my balance(later cured with my brain surgery this past April at UCLA/Ronald Reagan Medical Center). They are long AND very tall and no way to exit a train to walk to either end. There are quite a few YouTubes of his railroad. Just Google “Mesa Grande R.R.”. We took a speeder and trailing car up there to run about four years ago. It was originally built as a 7.5" gauge, but was easily changed over to 9" gauge in a matter of a few minutes. Lots of fun!
