I just converted a bachmann 10 wheeler to battery power and lost the stock sound. All I did was disconnect the motor leads from the wipers inside the engine and run them to a receiver and connected it to a battery. Can anyone figure what I did wrong ?
When disconnecting the wipers inside the engine did you disconnect the leads to the chuff drum? This is what gives the chuff signal to the sound card.

There are two red wires running to 2 wipers on the front axle. I did not disturb them.
Hmmm… Did you check to see if the 9v battery is still good and the volume dial is turned up? Also did you hook up the wires from the tender to the loco. That’s about all I know.

Yes Brian I have checked all that you mentioned. You can connect the sound to where the light is supposed to go and you get sound but not the chuff that is supposed to happen.
Dennis,
the light connection is a direct (continuity) circuit to the motor. Are you still using the 9 volt battery or the onboard R/C battery to power the sound? Did you get continuity right with the 9 volt battery connection? The chuff will only work when there is a break in the circuit. These wires are quite fine you may have disconnected during loco assembly. Maybe a multimeter on the rear ‘Sound’ connect point and see it you have a make/break circuit when you rotate the lead driver. This will separate the problem to either loco or tender.
It is still powered with the 9 volt battery. The battery will only go in one way. I only plugged it into the light to make sure I didn’t destroy or disconnect something in the tender.
