Battery install on a bachmann porter need some ideas

I’m trying to squish batteries, Airwire and a P5 into a Bachmann side tank porter. Any suggestions? I’m thinkin I’m gonna have to take out the weight to fit it all in but then the lil feller won’t be able to pull anything. Anybody have any ideas? I was also thinkin I could fill the domes with shot and there is a little room in the gear box for extra weight as well. I dunno if it will be enough. Any suggestions would be great.

Oh, and as stated above i’m using airwire, a P5 and I’ll probly be leaning towards lithium batteries just for the space.

Thanks,
Terry

not long ago I “finished” a Saddle-Tanker (Bachmann) with all on-board. I did pull the weight, and since my “finished” and my complete aren’t the same thing, I’m not sure about pulling capacity-yet to mount couplers. I mounted the receiver and RCS Throttle under the cab roof, Sierra to top of tank, with batteries arranged in weight area…now granted we are talking two different locos, it’s doable… I know TOC has a Side tank converted on his line! I used “AA” NiMh that I had laying around-14.4v.

Hi Terry

Like Cale, I put batteries and RCS into my side tank porter (but no sound). I too ditched the weight and the batteries make up for some of that (12 x 2400mAH AA NiMH) which went in the side tanks. The motor controller went under the boiler, the Rx in the cab roof, and there was a little room left over for some sheet lead to bring the weight back up to close to what it was before, though if I was adding sound, it would go in where the sheet lead went and it should (just) fit.

Those porters really do run well though, and it is probably the most reliable of my locos so far, running for well on 2hrs+ on a full charge (I haven’t run it flat yet, so that’s only a guess).

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Tony
