Battery Charger Replacement Suggestion!

Help!! Have a party tonight and went out to make sure my trains were charged last night. Went to boot up my MAHA charger and I got a display on the screen for about 1/2 a second and it went blank. Waited for it to “boot” for about 10 minutes and came to nothing. My cables going into the charger the Tamiya plug type.

I would like something just to make sure there is a charge…TOC supplies equipment to me but he is obviously too far away…the only things we have locally is Radio Shack, Walmart, Ace Hardware, and Home Depot,

Please share your thoughts if you have any!!

Thanks,

Richad

Any fuses?

Any R/C cars or plane hobby shops around, a source for a new one…

Have you tried a multi tester across the leads to see if there’s any out put?

John

As John noted, check for a fuse, maybe in the plug or on the unit. If you are not electronic skilled try the Radio Shack. But be sure that what you buy will charge your batteries! Do you keep the unit in a damp location? That will some times cause problems. With out the unit in hand it is hard to figure out what may be the problem. Paul

Another thought…

Are the batteries cold? You’ve been having a little rain I’ve heard…

Everything is housed in the garage so the equipment stays dry. I did trip the circuit a few weeks ago trying hook up Christmas lights and immediately unplugged the unit. Its hooked to a surge protector as well. The charger is a MAHA brand but it looks discontinued.

I’ll check the Radio Shack in our town…we are very limited here with that kind of stuff.

Richard,

Checkout this place. Shouldn’t be too far from Reedley. RC place in Fresno.

Just checked on Google Earth. 18.5 miles away from you.

Dumb question, but did you try the reset button on the Maha?

YEP ! Always check for a reset button … vacuuming a couple wks ago snagged some loose thread on a rug beater bar stopped working, thought the drive belt had broke took it apart belt like new reassembled and THEN noticed on top of the beater bar assembly ‘Reset belt’ button yeeeech … but then I was suffering thru the worst cold infection in like 8 yrs. Luckily not running trains during that period, just a vacuum !!!

Good Luck with the Maha !

Great question Greg…I had the same thing happen on my old MAHA about fours years ago. Pressed the reset. Nothing. Sent it up to Paul Burch. He did “something” to it and it STILL works. I gave it to him.

Yeah, I still have a maha, and just gave an older one to a good home. I need to buy a spare one, wonder who has any left?

Greg

Any of these your Maha of choice; http://vancouverbattery.com/index.php?cPath=55_6426_1067 ?

I’ve been wondering what ya all were actually talking about, this source popped up with a listing.

this one:

Hey Greg, the one pictured above is exactly the one that has stopped working. I thought there might be some hope earlier today when I tried plugging it in again and I got a scrambled looking screen…that was more than the night before. But that went away fairly quickly and still didn’t want to work. I’ve looked and couldn’t find anywhere on the unit where a fuse might be.

I think I’ll just have TOC send me a new one whenever the radio gear finally comes in for my 3-truck shay…been waiting and waiting, and waiting, and waiting…but there is hope.

Hey Richard,

I’m happy to hear it worked out for you! I was disappointed in one of your previous posts because it sounded like you were going to have to wait to get a charger. Good news for Christmas.

Yes Gary, picked it up today and its charging my son’s James the Red Engine as I type this.

Large scale train products are basically scarce in this neck of the woods after Roy’s Trains and Things closed shop. The closest thing is in Tehachapi with Gold Coast Station about 2 1/2 hours away.

Did you get a Tenergy Smart Charger that does all the common battery chemistries? Similar to the one I posted a link to?

No…the only thing they had was a Lektron 45 watt that does all the chemisties. It seems to be working fine. They use them to charge RC cars, etc.
