Battery and Sound in LGB Mike

Wow… here is an LGB question not related to the whole LGB thingy…

I have 2 LGB Mikes. I am thinking about converting one to battery power. I really like the LGB sound for the Mikes. My question… is it possible to keep the LGB sound and still convert to battery power/remote control?

Timmy,

As far as function is concerned, I don’t see why not, just connect the output from the R/C system where the track power would be feeding in. Now if all the additional equipment will fit into that space…? Let’s hear what Dave G has to say on that.

Tim.
The short answer is yes.

However, if the loco also has a DCC decoder fitted, you must remove it or it may get “confused” if you are using a pwm controller.

There are two ways you can convert to battery R/C.

  1. Simply remove the track pick ups and feed the output of the R/C controller to the existing LGB wiring.
This enables all start up sounds and correct directional toots.
The trade off is you will need much higher battery voltage to operate the loco.
  2. Isolate the motor(s) from the LGB electronics and power them direct from the motor driver output and power the sound direct from the batteries.
You will require much less battery voltage, but the trade off is you lose start up and directional sound.

R/C operation for the whistle and bell requires tapping into the magnetic triggers in the motor block.

Dave converted mine over to RCS just fine, bell and whistle and smoke !
