Bashing LGB

The RedBoxBrigade would probably cry “Sacrilege and Blasphemy”, but back in 2007 when LGB bargoons were to be had I bought two of the D4061-63 baggage cars. LGB decided on the more modern, rebuilt version - probably because they knew I would need a green one with entrances on both ends.  The modern one came in red and the Alpine Classic Ivory and Blue, with just the one enclosed platform. Now I’m “in the mood” and the chopping has started. Marked the cut, applied the saw, touched up on the milling machine (clamping this stuff is the real challenge!) and now I can apply the MEK. BTW, funny smelling plastic they use in China and it sure doesn’t cut as crisply on the milling machine, either.

It all has to be backdated to the original version ca. 1970. That means changing several of the windows, as well as the sliding doors. Painting it green and applying the older style lettering. But all in all still a relatively quick way to get a car that isn’t available; without starting from scratch.  What is left of the Alpine version will be bashed into a baggage with open platforms using the existing frame and lasering new walls etc.

HJ,
as Vic would say, “Oh, the huge manatee!” I suppose if you are going to cut into LGB, then at least it is the Chinese imitation LGB and not the ‘real’ LGB, so all is forgiven!

Errrrrrrr …hmmmmmm I’m also bashing the proper length version of the RhB EW1 coaches and they are genuine, virgin German material  It cuts very nicely, not like that Chinese material.

There is a big difference in the way the older “German” material cuts vs the “China” material. What I liked best about the “German” materials was the ability to ‘score and snap’. Nice clean cuts!

But what have you two found to glue it with?

I have two of the old LGB “short” passenger cars I’m thinking about chopping on!

Doug,

MEK seems to work well.

And you can also enjoy the “side effects”.

Yes JB, that’s why I phrased it differently.
