Large Scale Central

Bashing a Logging Tool Caboose

You take an ordinary LGB Bobber like this: I used a cheap old Santa Fe one out of a starter set I found at a swap meet. I forgot to take a pic of it before I started.

Remove all the stuff you don’t want.

Take a rasp and file off anything protruding past the siding on all for sides.

I want to bring this up to 1:20 ish, so I added 1/2" overall to the width by gluing on 1/4" strips.

Cut and file out a larger door on the windowless end. Glue it on the inside.

Glue on siding, “glass” and trim the door. do the same to the other end.

I put the original roof back on and glued some 1/16" strips to it.

Then glued some siding to the sides.

I glued some 1/16" thick by 2" wide roofing to the slats, and some siding to the porches.

I cut a hole for a chimney and glued on some “tar Paper” cloth.

I dug some scrap hardware out of the junk box, made some handrails and finished both ends.

Next I will paint it and show you how it looks behind a log train. Too cold for a train, but here’s the finished car.

…grinning…

Nice looks much better.

How do you get to the roof?

Great looking conversion!!

I’ve got one that I had taken the truck off of. I was going to convert it to a two tuck unit. That was in my early LS days, before 1:20 became my scale of choice. Once I was committed to 1:20 scale, I saw that the doors and other items were way too small. I didn’t know what to do with the too small cupola either. It has been occupying space on a top shelf for well over 10 years.

Seeing what you did, I think I’ll try something similar. I still want to put mine on individual trucks, but I think I already had that figured out.

Thanks for sharing your conversion & the pix.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Very nice John. Looks great!

With an extension ladder. It's stored in the tool cubby.

Very nice conversion. Thanks for sharing. Have to save this for another project to do.

Looking good John. This whole idea of up-scaling existing stock is appealing to me. If I ever finish the 5 or 6 railroad projects I’ve already started I might see what i can do with some of the 1:24 stuff I have.
