I also posted this over at that other site, but you guys know 1:20 better than anyone, SO…
I’d like to bash a standard gauge flat car sitting on narrow gauge trucks (EBT style) in 1:20 to pull behind a Bachman 45 Ton switcher. I’ve been given dimensions of 9Ft wide x 40Ft long as a common size of a wood deck flat.
Widening an Aristo 1:29 car to 1:20.3 doesn’t look too hard, as the added material could be covered with new wood decking. Lengthening looks tricky, so the question is, do I need to lengthen?
A 40Ft car in 1:29 works out to be 28Ft in 1:20.3, close enough to 30Ft for me. Was 30 Foot a common length for steel framed wood deck flats in any era? I’ve heard of 20 foot cars, but never 30.
Or perhaps the better question is, what are some common flat car dimensions for steel framed cars from any post war era?
Thanks for the help.
