Large Scale Central

Barry, how's it coming?

This is getting more than tiring. Monday I was still suffering, from of all things, hiccups (Brit. hiccoughs). I went to the ER on Tuesday, was prescribed 1000 units of Thorozeine (sp) took it all in (?) 3 1/2 hrs of a 4 hr. drip. They were ready to discharge me after 1 hr of the drip, I decided as long as I was there to go the full route. The hiccups resumed after 3 1/2 hrs, so I checked out.

Went back into the ER Thursday eve. One of the DRs. assigned to my case discovered that a negative symtom for my Pacemaker was Hiccups. So he pursued that venue, ordered a CRT which I had. Without explanation was discharged before midnight, went home.

Next day rescheduled with my regular Dr. Went in, had a Rx which my DR. changed to a “better” script. Thie was to relieve my hiccups. It worked. Near the end of the first dose, 5 1/2 hrs. I felt the hiccups coming back so took the pill early. It is now after midnight Saturday, no hiccups yet.

Heard from TOC, he left a msg, as did I. Will talk with him tomorrow and advise.

Hiccups gone, so is the prescription.

Dave has been tied up, I guess. Check with him tomorrow.

Barry glade your doing better.
I may have to call you and see if you can walk me thought the shay fix.
I tested it today and if I pick up one of the trucks off the track it stops and the other keeps going so your right on the money with what needs to be done. Your good is all I have to say.
Thanks for the help
Geoff

Geoff,

As I may have suggested, TOC is the expert on geared locos as far as I am concerned. He should be able to solve your issues.

I didn’t look back far enough, but I think I mentioned that I have pneumonia. Have been taking an antibiotic for the past 7 days. Have finished that and will have another chest X-ray on tuesday, then meet the Doc to see if we got it. Very tired, hope this is over soon.

Barry - BBT

hope you getting better.
Have as nice a week end as you can
Geoff

Man you’ve had a rough time, hope it gets better SOON!

Got some work done today, for a change. Needed to have some loco weights for some conversions and upgrades. Last thursday and friday were nice and cool, but I didn’t have the energy, but got most everything done today. 104 on the car port. Will finish up tomorrow afternoon.

Chest X-ray tomorrow morning, to see if the pneumonia is gone. Won’t know until the Doc calls me.

But, feeling a lot better. Hope to catch up on my work now.

Barry - BBT

Glad you feeling better Barry. I hope this is the end of your health problems.

As I mentioned yesterday, got a good bit done. Today got three warranty units finished and will shipp in the AM.

Feeling better, got the x-Ray done at 10:00 this AM, should hear from the Doc tomorrow (I hope).

But have a couple more warranty/upgrades for tomorrow. Then on to the gearboxes, saw a good report from TOC/Steve Stockham, very encouraging.

Barry glade your doing better. Get all that work out of the way. You have my Christmas Loco coming your way in Oct. I’ll drop it off on my way out to CA and I hope maybe can pick it up on my way back for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Is 4 weeks being to pushy?

I wish it would stop raining and get nice. I’m dying to run the new Loco.

thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

A couple of weeks is fine. If I am not short on parts from the outside. Rather sensitive subject right now. Have four 2-8-0s which need cast siderods. My caster is ill and has been for a while. Have a call in to see what the actual status is.

Barry - BBT

Barry,
Heaven forbid, but do you have a back-up foundry?

John,

Actually a very good question. A couple of weeks ago, I would have said no, but I talked with Chuck Allen (Shortline, Car & Foundry) and found out he is building his shop. Up to the time he shut down a few years ago, Chuck had only cast in pewter. Pewter is fine for detail parts, but not for anything which needs strength. Before shutting down, Chuck bought a whole brass casting set up, lots of money. He made a few test runs and then had to move everything into storage. I still have one question and that is if he will be doing lost wax casting. The magnesium-bronze which I have been using is similar to brass and can use the same equipment. But all of my masters are for lost wax casting. We’ll see. I am still waiting for an answer from my regular guys.

Barry
ran the 2-8-0 today. Man she runs like a dream. got pictures and will post them tomorrow when I have more time. thanks
Geoff

I saw Geoff’s 2-8-0 last night and oh wow, that is fantastic. If I ever decide I need an inside frame 2-8-0, you’re first on my list.

Robbie,

Thanks. I just saw the pics Geoff has posted, it sure looks good.

Now I’ve got to finish the 2-8-0 Outside frame motor and gearbox, a different kind of pretty.

Talked to my casting guys today.

They have been busy. But I have a commitment for a good number of 2-8-0 siderods, and crosshead guides and the new crossheads. Should see everything in about two weeks, they are casting this week.

Barry,
You need to put a link to your website in your signature.

Are the side rods plain Jane or do they have cast in features?
An alternative and cheaper way is water jet or laser cutters if they are just plain flat pieces of steel.
We used to get parts smaller than side rods lasered out of a sheet of material.
Al they need is to draw the part in their computer and then let it fly.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is pretty simple: www.barrysbigtrains.com

I have laser cut stainless steel siderods for the PLUS line of locos/drives. But the ANNIEs have a hinged siderod, which allows me to create a cast siderod for the those models. The hinge gives me the opportunity to equalize the first axle, which means all of the flanged drivers are in contact with the track all of the time. I used the Bachmann design detail to create the three piece 2-8-0 siderod castings. I also copied the 4-6-0 siderod, but much less call for them (Bachmann already supplies them). The casting material is magnesium bronze, very strong and can be polished, see Geoff George’s pics of the SPC 2-8-0 I built for him.

Looked at water jet some years ago and determined they were too ragged an edge. In fact, I have reduced the hole sizes in my laser cut siderods, because the holes were too abrasive, which wore out the rod pins. Now I drill out every hole, much easier. I need to add, the laser-cut siderods have some bolt detail added to the flat steel.
