Running a K-27 over scale 60 mph sounds like someone who will be replacing a motor real soon!
The motor is not going to fail, but it is a torquey unit. Not a lot of rpm (6130) especially compared to my 8000 series Pittman (10,000 rpm). Of course we never see that, but the flexability in the mid ranges is particularly good.

As delivered, the K has 14.5:1 gear ratio.
One person on another forum timed a measured distance and got over 60 smph.
We have about 29:1 in the DC-27, the same as the 2-8-0.
I no longer have the delay and lunge of the original drive while starting a train on a grade.
It surprises me how much better it looks at WOT now.
I have been running it, with train, and am pleased.
I think I shall have Paul run it at the convention.
This gearbox uses the stock as-delivered Bachmann Pittman motor.
A 9000-series will, in fact, handle it.
I guess my Shay won’t be racing that K27.
Congratulations you two!
And he said he would let me operate it!! YAAA I look forward to this part of the testing of something new and better. Thank you Dave and Barry! I think we will all be happy with this one, too.
Paul
None of us mentioned the motor is a 19 Volt version.
And it is the motor supplied by Bachmann, less the thrust bearings and the silly flywheel.

Report:
Over six hours, same batteries, 4.5AH, the NiCad 2AH units previously in it ran about an hour, so at 2 amps originally average, this is better.
Have not plugged in a test probe yet.
EPA ran it all day, had issues, but they were with the as-supplied-chassis, which seems to be more sensitive to various things than the original chassis.
I will look into it later, but the gearbox/motor operated flawlessly, smoothly, low speed characteristics were excellent (Paul liked to creep the train past onlookers at what seemed about 2smph).
446 signed-in visitors in six hours, figure 10% who never do and kids, 500 folks here.
Gawdalmighty it was busy.
2 hour nap, now I’m better.
OK, it was GREAT and AWESOME! It will run slower that the 3 Truck Shay will run! The control was as smooth as silk. Nice easy starts and the pull up grade was great. Barry, when will we be able to get the units installed in our Locos? I want one, please.
I know that I will need to do some work on my own layout to be able to operate the K-27as well as on teh TOC railroad (CCRy), but it will be worth it. I do have some serious problems with my track work but not with this Loco and the NEW gearbox. I can still run on the CCRy!
Paul
Paul,
I have been waiting to hear from you on your run with the K. Thank you.
Any downsides?
Barry - BBT
Barry; no, I saw no downsides. I think that we (those with older layouts) may have problems due to small radius curves and No. 4 turnouts (which I may have), but it will run on the CCRy with-out any problem or on any other layout with nice large radius (5 foot PLUS) curves.
Paul
Thanks again, Paul.
Barry
An added note, I am rebuilding a section of the layout where I was having some problems with derailments and the K-27. First the turnouts are all #6 so I don’t think that was the big problem, it was the track layout, too many ‘s’ curves and not level or smooth either. I will trade a right hand for a left hand turnout to keep the curves more normal and lay a MUCH smoother track bed. Some engineer, when he can’t the track work correct! Maybe they will take my license away, if I don’t do better.
I plan on removing the subbed (Trex) and starting with better support, more stacks, and the larger rocks under the Trex. Yes, I’ll do the picture thing, if I can get them to upoad.
Paul
Paul,
Dave noticed a problem with the K-27 derailing for him, he solved the problem.
I believe it had to do with one of the small axles with a burr in a cross-drilled hole.
Barry - BBT
Barry,
Update on the K-27, if any?
John,
Dave has been gone for the past week. Hopefully we’ll hear something after he gets settled in next week.

Since I am an advertiser, I got my GR mag last Friday.
In the Product Reviews, my Motor and Gearbox for the Connie, is covered, and very nicely.
Also Kevin S. also writes an article on the problems/ solution and description of various gearing issues.

Barry,
I too am waiting for the K drive. I am hoping I will be able to install myself. My connie is fantastic

Rick,
Glad the Connie worked out.
Dave and I are still wrestling with the “K”, there are some issues we’re trying to resolve.
Barry - BBT
Just for the record, I am out of BBT Motor and gearbox Kits for the Connie. I have started cutting blanks from the extrusions, which will be followed by a lot of machining.
Hopefully ready mid January.
