Kevin, can you describe how you “set the brakes?” Your post above was kind of brief.

That’s one of those “A picture is worth 1000 words” things. I’m headed back to Colorado today, so I’ll get pics posted shortly.

But it was a sight to see that little Forney, hauling 10 USA woodside cars and a caboose, up the 2.58% grade and around the turn in Library. Sure she was going uphill slower then she went downhill, but she never slipped a driver nor stalled.

“I think I can; I think I can; I think I can. Oh my gosh I did!” (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Yup, especially since, until now, the Moguls were restricted to 8 of those USA cars. So it was quite a show to see the little Forney dragging 10 up to the summit.

I am calling this project a success. The goal was to get to the point, where I could haul a decent number of the narrow gauge cars up to the summit with a narrow gauge locomotive.

I have 2 more USA woodside cars to upgrade, and 2 LGB woodside cars to upgrade, and then the Aristo cars will be upgraded a few at a time as time goes on. The standard gauge trains (using Aristo cars), have only been limited in length by the length of the reverse loop, so upgrading the Aristo cars isn’t a priority. The Bachmann, Roundhouse/MDC, Piko cars, are light enough, that they may never be upgraded to ball bearings.

The brake issue has a simple solution - - - just don’t put bearings on the wheels - - use unmodified trucks on the caboose

use one of the ones that doesn’t roll very good .

Kevin, any pics, yet?

Bill, well, that doesn’t work quite as well on my grades as you might think. I have an Aristo classic caboose, and with the power pick ups, its almost like the brakes are on on the caboose all of the time. It can hold itself and maybe 2 or 3 cars on my grades, but anymore then that, and the slightest push or bump, and then string of cars starts to wander off.

Steve, rather than derail this thread, I just started a new topic here in the Operations forum.

I’m definitely open to thoughts and comments, and to read what others may be trying.

After the ECLSTS, I bought another set of 100 ball bearings, so that I can upgrade the show cars and a few other “stones” I have. I had to look up this thread, because I couldn’t remember what sized drill bit I used. So, hopefully this week, the Shannon Car Shops is going to upgrade the 3 new cars to the P&CSRR. 2 show cars, and a new to us Aristo wooden reefer.

And I still need to fix my storage shelf. The one shelf has just enough warp to it, that in one of the slots, a ball bearing equipped car will roll forward on the shelf.

Funny, I too went hunting for this thread recently after I found a deal on the bearings http://www.aliexpress.com/item/50pcs-3mm-MF63ZZ-3-mm-6-mm-2-5-mm-MF63-miniature-flange-deep-groove-ball/32521872064.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.1.zQ4JK7&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_10,searchweb201602_2_10017_10034_10021_507_10022_10020_10018_10019,searchweb201603_2&btsid=c8d1b9fa-1094-4228-be13-45826c5dbb51

WOW, that’s a great price. I may have to get another batch at that price.

Dan did you buy those bearings yet? just asking last time i bought from a Chinese store my cc charged extra.

Yes. I’ve made many purchases from Aliexpress.com and banggood.com and have never been charged any more than the stated price. That said, these are not really “stores” but a collection of vendors. Just like buying from eBay. (many of them also sell on eBay) Heck, the seller I purchased from transmission CNC and the eBay seller speed_mart could be one in the same. I choose a seller based on positive feedback years in business etc.

I am curious at to what the additional charge was for? Was it a bank charge? Additional shipping?

BTW: Aliexpress and banggood both send me discount codes and I get 5% back on all purchases from eBates

http://www.ebates.com

Well, gee. I ordered some more, but I had to create yet another log in, and they don’t accept Discover Card nor Pay Pal. But I appreciate the link, that is the cheapest I have seen those bearings.

Once they arrive, my shop should have several years worth of bearings laid in. Considering how my crew works, the supply of bearings may be a lifetime supply.

Dan it was CC charge, FOREIGN TRANSACTION FEE.

Gee, I didn’t have that problem when I bought a locomotive from Australia, nor the bearings from China. I wonder if that is a card specific thing.

Yep, Seems it is card specific

http://www.creditcards.com/glossary/term-foreign-transaction-fee.php

I only have debit cards (run as credit) and I’ve never seen it.

Gee, I would be rather upset if I had to pay an extra fee. Heck, that would more then negate the cost savings of buying the bearings from China. And the locomotive I bought from Australia was expensive enough, what with the VAT and shipping.

Great find!

I have been purchasing the same product on EBAY for 6.99 for 10.

Ideally I would like to find 3.5mm rather then 3mm as they fit better but alas I have not been able to find them since Aristo Craft left us.

Thanks for the link.

Stan

Actually David, It’s not that bad. I googled a bit more and found the typical transaction fee is 1-3%. I get 5% cash back from eBates so even if I had to pay the fee I still make out.

Dan I thank that is a great find. I find myself just a little leery,i thank my chg. was like 5% and i got burnt on the items also.but still if it works for you. The ones i use i get out of fl. from a RC shop. the price is not as good as this. thanks for post.

I just got another one done.
