Large Scale Central

Backwoods log loader

Looking through old NG Gazettes, I spotted this plan of a Surrey Parker loader. I had a friend blow the drawing up to 1:20.3 and started the build. I deviated from the plan in a few places, but kept the same dimensions. I also photographed a build log for a friend who wanted to build one as well. So I cut two pieces of everything and made up a kit for him. If anyone is interested, I can post the pics here.

A few pieces of wood, and an order to Ozarks for some pulleys, etc I was ready for the build. I had an old Ozark steam donkey I built years ago laying around and decided to use that for the loader.

Nice job John.

John, a very nice piece… I’m sure there would be quite a few folks who would appreciate the ““build log”” posted on here…

What he said… BZ

Boomer,

The scale plans were full size 1:20.3 plans from the scanned plans above. A sheet of paper about 3’ x 3’ was the end result.

A computer software program was used to scale the plans, printed out and taped together.

OK, so scan each of the sheets, convert to PDF and post them here. We can then print them out and tape them together.

Thanks.

Edit: Of course, anybody with a lick of sense could make a reasonable facimily with what you have given us.

Very Cool John!!! I would like to see some more pics/drawings as well if you wouldn’t mind

Very nice!

That is really neat.

Will that machine also have a way to pull the cars through and will you model it?

I wonder what the other end looks like. Is it a post with a pulley?

Todd,

A locomotive backs a set of flats, skeletons or disconnects thru the hoist. And then pulls them back out as the loader loads logs from the sides of the track.

Once they are done with the loader, they lower it down on a flat car with jacks and move it to another location. Jack it back up, position the legs and tie it off on each side with the stabilizers.

John,

What issue was that in??

Bob C.

March/April and May/June 2003.

It appeared in a later issue as a built model, but I can’t remember which one. There’s too many to go thru.

“Surrey Parker” log loader would be your search title.

Some build pics. Please ignore the spelling mistakes. The steps go from top to bottom, left to right. Build each section as modular units: Deck, A frame and Boom, and roof. Ask questions and I’ll try to answer. I sometimes forgot pics as I was building, cause I was having too much fun.

John, Do you have anything with dimensions for the wood pieces?. Or is it possible to buy a set of the plans?..Travis

Travis, I used the top picture for dimensioning. The decking ends at 3’ 8" from the front of the loader.

Once you scale that to the scale you are building, everything else is adjusted.

I scaled the 12" x 12", 12" x 10", 8" x 8" lumber to 1:20.3 with my conversion 12" 1:202.3 ruler I bought somewhere. Most of it is made up of 1/2 sq, 3/8 sq, etc. “Close enough” is my motto. I am not going to plane any dimensional basswood down to the exact thousands of an inch.

Thanks John! Another project added to the ‘round to it pile’.

very nice. Maybe it’s a good thing I already have my hands full with coal an oil related projects

Very nice build John.

Interesting interpretation

using a vertical spool Dolbeer.

Rick

John that looks great. Someday I need to build something like that.

That came out awesome! Nice job! Thanks for posting that build log
