Bachmann's new A.C. Dole & Son reefer - logos are decals

Hey Y’all; Just got home with a copy of Bachmann’s new A.C. Dole & Son reefer. http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewProd&productId=3156 It is an attractive car. Was surprised to find the logos applied as waterslide decals complete with bubbles and silvering in the grand old decal tradition. Even split when running fingernail down board join grooves. Well, I don’t know, may be adhesive but sure look like waterslide to me. Build model rockets with adhesive decals and have done a couple RC car bodies with adhesive decals but the texture of these sure seems waterslide to me. BUT - how would that work in a factory setting. Logically it would seem adhesive would be the way to go.

Gonna dose it with Solvaset or MicroSol just to see what happens. Yeah, I know, a $75 gamble.

They did respond well to Micro Sol, whatever they are.

Another freaking amazing discovery from Bachmann.
I’m not surprized.
I guess stamping was getting too costly…

That looks like a Hoods refer.
Copies were made by Delton, LGB, and USA.

Now that Micro Sol is safely dry - sure settled into between boards grooves nicely.

I’m still looking at that and saying “there ain’t no way that’s a decal, there just ain’t no way”. Uh, obviously there IS a way. Go figure. Now the question is - what do you clear coat it with that’s compatible with the freaking paint? I’m fine with logos being decals - would have loved to have this as a kit to paint and apply those decals myself, applying waterslide decals is a favorite part of building models.

What socket does the orange Bachmann kitty use?

The New PU55-Ie

Stan should be able to comment on this.
All I will say is that I did a better job on the first one of these I did with decals I made myself. The second car is much better.

To answer your real question, I used Krylon Matte clear. Just a light coat over the decal seals everything.
