I need some help in hooking up my Bachmann smoke unit.
I removed the Shay’s smoke unit a while ago.
I tried using a 5volt LGB unit, Now can’t remember how Bachmann’s smoke unit was hooked up !
I’m drawing blanks on this.
Thanks
Sean
I believe it was a 12v unit, and believe they burn up pretty quickly if run out of fluid.
You can get a wiring diagram on the Bachmann site.
If you want to use a 5v one you need to make a regulator circuit.

I didn’t see a Bachmann smoke unit on your web page??
OK : Too technical answer for me.
I’ll ask another way
Power goes into unit then comes out. I know that much. Now

So were are they are connected in this photo?
The two screws mount it to the holder, do they also take power in and out

Yes. The screws both mount the unit and supply power through ring terminals. If you look closely you will see that the metal case is electrically in two pieces.
In my opinion the Bachmann units aren’t worth keeping. The don’t smoke worth a hoot and as Greg says, they burn up real easy. An Aristo unit from an SD-45, RDC or most of the later diesels will work much better.

Thanks so much !
I’m way Too lazy/bizzy to try to mount one .
For $ 15 not to bad.
I just have to keep it off when not using it.
Hooked the unit up and we had smoke!!!
Thanks John
I can’t believe I forgot were they were attached to.

Usually that’s a bad thing with electronics, but in your case GREAT!!
Since we had a member recently with a smoke unit fire caused by overvoltage, keep the voltage limited to about 12v and turn the switch off when it is out of fluid.
