Bachmann Shay Gears

Does anyone know where I can find replacement gears for an older shay. The main drive gear on the axles are split and broken.

Thank you,

Nico

Now might be a good time to bite the bullet and purchase the new and improved diecast metal trucks.

Nico

Are you talking a bout these? Pic #1

Or are these the problem? pic #2

Pic #2 cost me $100 over a year ago… Got it from Bachmann.

Very easy to replace.

Good luck!

I am referring to the gears on the shaft that drives the wheels inside the gear box.
This is not my engine, I am repairing it for a friend.

Thank you

Nico hes better off buying the new die cast trucks. RLD hobby has then for $140. Frank and I just discussed this with his Shay he got. Bachmann couldn’t help. Im sure a few of the RC car sites might have gears that work.

I agree on the new trucks suggestion. When I was rebuilding #5 I had the same problem but had no budget for new trucks. Gary Buchanan had some metal gears left over at a great price, but they needed to be pressed on the axle. Don’t know if he still has any left.

The best idea is a new set of all metal trucks, yes pricy but well hold up for a long time! That I how I solved my problem awhile back. Paul

I bought a set of metal trucks about ten years ago, when they first became available - around $80 or so then.

So far they are unopened.

I’m told that they are a PITA to fit…

tac I sure hope not. I have the trucks and my Ely Thomas Shay just waiting to be be united.

I have installed several in shays and no problem

Ah, but you see, I’m a eejit from the bogs, me.

I need supervision when operating a spoon, for a start. After that, things get confusing for me.

tac

tac, I am rarely allowed out without adult supervision, so I understand.

I just went to the RLD hobbies and did not see them on the website?

Trainworld has them for $200

Nico you have to call him. You wont find on web site. Frank just called to see and they had them.

Reindeer Pass has them listed on there site also.
I changed over one of my older Shays a couple of years ago to the new trucks, they run really nice

TAC, whoever told you the new trucks were a pain to fit, I’d question his experience next advice you get from him. This is a really old situation with many people replacing the original ones with no complaints.
