Cale,
Your signature would also include the ones who pay a non-refundable deposit on this thing.
You’re right. Wait for the second or third run.

I would assume it is non refundable if you fail to cough up the balance. I would guess St. Aubins would issue a refund if Bachmann failed to produce.
Am I correct in assuming the Davenport is available?
Ralph

Actually, with the pricing shown there on the Mallet, many should be able to save the hobby money by November for the first release.

Also, remember that Ste. Aubins is not always the cheapest dealer on the block…

…and the Davenports should be here shortly if not already, the UK dealers are making customer deliveries.

called and tried to order Davenport…Jason said they didn’t have them and didn’t know when they would!?

Thanks for passing that along, Cale. They sure didn't make that very evident. I would like to get one myself. How's your wife? Ralph

thanks for asking!

Not surprising I am afraid, they took moeny for one model from me and my order, then a week later decided to issue a refund saying they no longer had it?!?!

Try e-mailing them sometime…

I wouldn’t buy one until Dave Goodson gives his “Gutting” report. Save your money and find out how they goofed up on this one first. Wait for the corrections, then after givina good look at what Dave reports; wait for the closeout sales…!!!

Probably excellent advice, Fred. Ralph

Looks nice, Wonder if it will stay on the track ?

???? Not sure what you are saying here?

Anyhow, Bachmann states they (Davenport) are shipping next week.

Translated:
Dave Goodson (TOC) usually acquires anything Backman makes in large scale and puts them thru their paces. As a rule, everything Backman introduces needs some sort of fixing or improving.
Why?
Dunno–some kind of conundrum. Some companies must have the worst beta testing or quality control.
Backman ranks as number one in that category!

(The above opinion is that of John Boucks and no one else’s.)

On the good side, they're number one at something.:(

Hmm, I have bought Bachmann stuff for over three decades without such “problems”.

That’s a really good experience, Garrett. But, if you happen to have:

1.) A Shay, with no problems: It’s because Dave diagnosed and fixed the degenerating plastic in the trucks, and melting pickpus, and got Bachmann to make the change in truck design to include the necessary washers, and beefed up contacts.

2.) A Consolidation: It’s because Dave caught the motor screw problem and loose counterweight problem that was making for stripped gears and locking valve gear… Bachmann now loctites new locomotives’ screws.

3.) A K-27: This is recent enough that everyone should remember the whole counterweight thing, and the chuff timer, even if you didn’t go the whole K-Rex route.

These have been identified and resolved. So if yours runs correctly, you now know why.

Also identified, but not formally addressed: Plunger contacts on the diesel. Wobbly gears on the saddletank. “Never Make” sound contacts on the Climax. “Loping” valve gear on the Heisler. Frog grabbing guide pins on the Spectrum 2-6-0. Diode bridge on the Shay sound interface (generally just a matter of discarding it) … and filter caps on most of the motors. All of these you might not notice except under specific circumstances (like trying to put timed sound in a Climax, for example) Addressing them makes the locomotive work better in every case except the wobbly drive on the Saddletank, for which there really is no cure without replacing the drive.

While you will find folks who are proud of plagarizing, belittling, casting aspersions upon, and ignoring each one of these fixes, privately and by published work, for the most part if you have a Bachmann unit that behaves badly, Dave has published a fix for it… and many of those fixes were incorporated by the manufacturer. It’s what happens when you use competent consultants.

As distinct from the incompetent one who has weaseled his way into the inner circle by using Dave and then stabbing him in the back.

To the list you might also like to add the virtually useless chuff timer contacts on the Heisler.
Unlike the Climax, where a reed switch and magnets can be added to chime the chuff, the Heisler has no such practical option that I have heard of.

One shudders to think what we may be in store for in the future.
