Bachmann Large Scale 2-6-0

Hello there ! I’m planning to buy a Bachmann Large Scale 2-6-0 Mogul.
Did anyone buy this loco ?
I use only R1 curves. I hope that loco can run on these curves.
I’m waiting for your answers and advices…

Are you talking about the Industrial 2-6-0 or the “old Time” 2-6-0?

It’s the Baldwin industrial 2-6-0 Mogul steam Locomotive with tender.

The following is from the Bachmann Forum. Hope this helps (I don’t have a Bachmann Mogul anymore - Spectrum or Indie).

I’m not sure if the 1st link is about the Indie or Spectrum Mogul.

“The 2-6-0 needs 5’ minimum dia. but you have to do a small repositioning of the coal pile and use the farthest setting on the drawbar for it to barely work! As Barry suggested, 8’ is really the minimum suggested although 6’ should work.”

“The Connie (2-8-0) really needs 8 foot diameter curves to run well. I think 6.5 is a minimum. The ten wheeler (Annie or Big Hauler), Indie 2-6-0, or two truck geared locos (shay, climax, heisler) will do fine on 5 foot curves.”

You mentioned R1 curves but not turnouts. I’ve had Bachmann locos that could handle R1 curves but not R1 turnouts.

Either way I think you are pushing your luck but if R1 is all you have the answer MIGHT be how many R1 curves are in series. One quarter circle at a time is easier than a half or full circle.

“S” curves are a more complex situation.

Jerry

Thanks for your answers !
I have R1 switches too and like you said, this radius is too small for this loco.
Like everybody I absolutely hate derailment.
So I can’t buy this steam engine…too bad!

It could be worse. You could have bought the loco before you knew its limits (like I did). I have made some great friends in 5 countries where I sold those locos I could not use (they loved them).

My answer turned out to be LGB Moguls but that does not make it the right answer for you.

Often, when it comes to R1 curves and turnouts LGB is the answer. On the other hand depending on how much R1 track you have the answer might be to sell the R1 curves (or save them for sidings), buy wider curves and buy the loco you really want.

Then again, it may be that you only have space for R1 curves and turnouts (like my garage sidings).

Good luck,

Jerry

R1’s are the minimum radius curves, about 24" in radius, that’s 2 feet! You to up grade your RR to R3 46" radius and that may not be enough! My 2 Truck Shay had problems on R1 radius curves!

Paul

I have a very small indoor layout and I only have space for R1 curves and turnouts.
I don’t have any problem with my Davenport and my Porter 0-4-0 but like everyone I’m looking for bigger locos…

Big locos are nice but they need big curves and usually end up with big cars and result in big trains ($$$).

That is fine if that is what you want and have the space & $$$ but when it is 90+ (or 60) degrees (or raining or snowing) outside I usually find myself inside playing with the smaller trains where I have smaller curves.

I like big locos/trains and big curves. I also like little locos/trains.

As long as you are running something and having fun that is what counts. IMHO too many folks keep putting off building their “layout” while they wait for something (more $, more space, more time, more anything).

One friend has boxes & boxes of trains (O & G gauge) and track but has yet to build a layout. We enjoy teasing him but he is happy and someday he probably will build a layout.

Jerry

Thanks for your advices Jerry !

Yes I have a lot of fun with my small layout !

I have also a lot of dream for my layout.

A life without dream is not a life.

“I’m not sure if the 1st link is about the Indie or Spectrum Mogul”

Chef,

I am pretty sure Jerry’s link is about the Spectrum 1:20.3 Mogul. The 2-6-0 “Industrial” loco (called the “Indie” by some) is a very small loco, and I would be surprised if it can’t handle 2’ radius or R1 track.
