Bachmann K-27 fan noise using Aristo Revolution?

Just wondering if anyone else experienced this…Assuming we used the same control system of course.

I run track power using the Aristo Revolution. I use “track-side” receivers, three loops on CAB 1/2/3. For giggles I installed an “on board” receiver in my Bachmann K, works as great as I thought it would but…However when at “idle” the motor cooling fan is still blowing at full blast. A noisy little beastie! I assume I have never heard it before as the sound of the running engine drowns it out pretty well. Anyone else have this situation? Normal?

When these came out, it was determined they were installed backwards and did no good. Most folks just took the shell off, unscrewed the fan, unplugged it, threw in in a junk box.
If you’re worried, look closely at the heat sink cooling fins on the motor…oh, wait, there aren’t any. Okay, then look at the cooling ports in the motor for the air to reach the innards…oh, wait, there aren’t any of those, either.
Mine have been out since week 2.

If you turn the fan over and remount it carefully it will suck the air upwards and give you voluminous smoke out from the stack instead of being sucked down into the innards.

Edit note: That %^#@ was automatically substituted by the site for the word s-u-c-k. Heaven knows why??

Well that %^#@'s

My fan’s been gone since day 1.
No problems with over heating.

The “carefully” part alluded to earlier in this thread means don’t use the long screws or you’ll punch a hole or two in the top of your boiler.

Yeah, I planned on flipping it, I just don’t like it roaring away at idle. No big deal, just curious if anyone else experienced this.

Now I think I’ll just leave it and install a Harbor Smoke Unit.

If you plan on using Rodney’s reduction gear, you’ll have to remove it anyway or at least, move it. I just removed mine and raised the circuit board next to it.

I wonder what would happen if you put the fan in parallel with the motor. I don’t remember the max voltage on the fan, it might only be 12 volts.

If it can take a higher voltage, then the fan would slow down as the loco went slower…

Greg.
I think the fan is 5 volts as it comes on at quite low speed.

Do like I did. Install QSI sound, and turn it up! It drowns out the fan noise nicely…

QSI don’t do sound for large scale anymore - or so it seems. Been waiting since November 2010 for them to get themselves into gear!!

I’m not big on sound but this loco will likely get a Phoenix system as I run it frequently on the club layout…The kids seem to really like the “Bells and Whistles”!

With the Harbor smoke and Phoenix sound it should give the 1:1 trains that run next to the layout a run for the money!

The K27 with Phoenix Sound is impressive. I think the large tender helps provide a deep bass chuff.

There are two P8 files for the K27. One has a beautiful sounding hand rung bell, but a screechy whistle. The other has a mechanical bell, but deep whistle.

I can’t find Ken Brunt’s video of his K27 with sound; perhaps he will provide the link.

Here’s one. It has the mechanical bell and the better sounding whistle.

I guess they need a third file, with the hand rung bell and deep whistle

Someday Phoenix will give us the ability to mix and match sounds. That will be fun. I’d like an Alco prime mover sound with a Hancock air whistle.

I have a Phoenix P8 in each of my GP-9s that I often run as a set. The volume of the sound boards can be raised and lowered with the Revolution throttle. I always wanted to reprogram the second unit with a Big Boy or something similar steam sound and keep it quiet until I was somewhere near Friar Fred. Then I would mute the lead unit and let the second blast out a good long whistle. Then change back before he could figure out where the phantom steam engine was.

The devil makes me do it!
