Bachmann J&S coach cut down to 9 window lenght Sierra coach

Hi Guys:

Has anyone reduced the length of the Bachmann J&S combine and J&S coach to 9 roof window lenghts?

J&S Coach: 9 windows on car body and 9 windows in roof.
J&S Combine: 4 windows on car body and 9 windows in roof

Thank you
Norman

No, but I did lengthen them

Norman,
like Dennis, I prefer to lengthen the B’mann cars. However, shortening would present the just same problems. To remove three windows would be a straight forward affair. Bear in mind though that the B’mann moulding varies in thickness along its entire length, including the roof moulding thickness. Thus simply cutting and joining will result in joining material that while it may only be 0.010" thinner (or thicker), will result in uneven sides once the join is made.

To overcome this, I measure the thickness of each piece to be joined with a Vernier and then adjust as required with 0.010" or 0.020" Evergreen strips attached to the thinner side. When the butt reinforcing plate (0.060" is joined across the inner face of the join, it should result in an even outer surface.

If you remove three windows length from the floor moulding, then you may result in too short a distance between the queenposts. I would not go less than around 72 scale inches as a minimum. This may entail also removing material from beween the truck bolster and the queenpost beam at either end.

When I do an operation on a car, I normally glue the roof to the body to give a stronger body. The nine window body is feasible (but a lot of work) to gain a shorter length car. I have lengthened several dozen cars and made all sorts of variations of coach, combine, RPO, baggage, etc. A very worthwhile pursuit.
