OK guys, I need some help, I would like to get a couple of these chassis, But I want to make sure that What I get would be the newest Anniversary ones.

I don’t have a clue which are the new drives and which are the older ones. Could someone advise me of the ones that are “Anniversery Version 5” or newer models?

Thanks

I’ve heard from those who have bought them that they’re the 5th-generation chassis. I’m quite tempted by that price, too, not that I need one. Why am I drawn to buy things I don’t need just because the price is right?

Just be careful about how well they fit an older superstructure.
I bought one recently that has Walschaerts valve gear. The top of the steam chests are little higher meaning the air cylinders either side do not let the body sit down fully. Easy enough to move the air tanks back a bit.

Bit of a clunk in the drive but runs smoothly enough.
What ticked me off though is one wheel on the front drivers wobbles a bit meaning it goes in and out of gauge a fraction. Occasionally picks a frog point and derails. Now waiting for a set of replacement front drivers.

DANGIT Like I need more stuff…

It looks to me like the $30 ones all have plastic rods/valve gear.

The $30 drives are Big Haulers, not Annies.
The ones I ordered earlier in the year were Generation 5 drives.
This seems to be the only Gen 5 Annie drive left in stock.

I just spent some time perusing the 10 wheeler drives on the parts site, and many of them show the full valve gear, and all of them APPEAR TO BE metal. I think I will call on Monday and ask a very direct question regarding the drive I am interested in. Considering the level of detail in the photos, I would hope they are not using deceptive advertising to sell off stock.

Good opportunity to stock up!

The more expensive ones are metal and version 5 and the cheaper one are also version 5 but with the plastic side rods. As someone above mentioned be sure to order the same style or side rods as the one you are replacing or you can expect the fit problems. There are no chassis available in the earlier chassis versions. Trying to color match the pilot, wheel, steam chests may be possible if you match your set number to the corresponding Chassis part number as they will be the same. If you bought your loco in its own box rather than a set, the part number will be the same as the one on the box your loco came in. In some cases the chassis will fit more that one loco, and you will have to click on the picture on the parts site to get additional detail.

This may provide more detail:

Wow RJ! you got lucky, All the $30 ones I saw have the plastic gear! Even the photos on the Bachmann site of the $30 copies show plastic valve gear.

No matter, the price is right and 40 bucks after the discount for an Annie drive is super cheap and $24 bucks for for a version 5 Big Hauler drive cannot be beat either. Better get yours before they get sold out I hear that some big Ebay sellers are snapping them up.

The $30 versions will fit all early Big Haulers with no problem, I was told, and others have posted, it is when using the $50 version on the old Big Hauler bodies is where fit issues arrive. The ones you see with the long pilot are replacements for the wood burners and the short pilot versions are for coal burners. Again get them while you can. I noticed that some are already sold out!!

All Metal drive rods and timing gear. Packed really well in their own littile packing boxes.

I’m going to update an older chassie with one, and I don’t know what in store for the other, some kind of bash i think.
