So this Project (#2 in the Florida series) is now over. The handcar works and is taking pride of place in the Christmas decor.
The green one refused to let me open it up. For some reason it has a different drive train. Cracked gears as well, by the feel of it.
I did read an old thread from someone who found a 3rd type of drive!
Note: it only takes pride of place until I find the young ladies who go with my FWRR loco. Rumor has it they were taken back to MD.
@PeterT Perhaps I missed it but did your fishing line fix work? Or did you end up sending the gears to Jiro?
Has anyone tried 3D printing replacement gears?

I’m not clear how you applied the fishing line. Can you please elaborate?
with gear in relaxed state, wrap the fishing line around the effected area, applying super glue as you go.
In my case I drilled holes either side of the split, and then tied it tightly with fishing line.
The glue was added once it was tight. I used a small clamp in the teeth to hold it closed while the glue was setting.
Jiro has replacement gears. The problem is that there are 3 of these in each unit, so you end up spending $$ on a Xmas handcar that will likely fail again next year.
Are there any brass replacements for NW??? Who ever they are?
@mickey, I think you are referring to North West Short Line, a supplier of gears and parts for mainly small scale models. They actually closed down, and an original employee reopened the business. I think his wife runs the order processing, shipping, etc.
They don’t use standard nomenclature, so it is sometimes difficult to find the exact gear you are looking for. (0.4 mod anyone?) They mislabel them too - the gear for the Bachmann 4-4-0 is not labelled correctly, though we know which one to buy!
Jiro Yermanian has done a great job of cutting Delrin gears for us, so I haven’t looked at their website for years.
