Bachmann Gen-2 Spectrum 2-6-0

Anyone interested in the Fn3 (1:20.3) 2-6-0s from Bachmann will be aware that they release a revised version in 2017. It has new gears, new details, and a new tender interior with a plug-n-play interface.

I finally got my hands on one [auction win] and decided to see if the plug-n-play Revolution board would fit, along with a battery. It did and it works - I’ll put a thread together for the conversion.

This being the review, I wanted to mention one small feature. As all the loco functions are now fed to the tender motherboard, there are 2 very large plugs and cables connecting the two. (The blue tape holds the fall plate out of the way. They are easily damaged, and I want to sell this as ‘new’.)

The wires are quite stiff and a pain to plug in and out. More interesting is that the coupler bar has 2 holes in it. If you use the close-coupled hole, the wires lift the tender so the wheels are off the track.

Clearly the close-coupled option is for shelf display, I guess.

Apart from that small issue, this beast is GORGEOUS. Just look at the paint and lining. And all that brass, including a pair of ‘working’ crosshead pumps for the water feed.

The C-19 and the latest 2-6-0 have the same set of connections to the tender and the same 2 slot drawbar. We got our first production C-19s in 2011 and to date the plugs. wires and sockets are doing fine.

We close couple all our 2-6-0s and C-19s and they work great in this configuration.

The issue you report has to do with how you connect the drawbar. There is a brake bar on the font and rear of each tender truck. When you close couple, the drawbar is longer then the distance from the front of the tender to the front brake bar on the front tender truck.

If you hook up the drawbar so that it is under this part it does not work well (as you report). The drawbar must go above this part. (between the tender floor and the top of the truck front brake bar).

Hope this helps

Ah yes. I should have remembered that. It is true of the older version tenders too.
