Bachmann Forum under SPAM Attack!

If you’ve been over to the Bachmann forum in the last three or four weeks you probably had to wade through a bunch of spam to get to anything significant. Things have only gotten worse! The "spamming’ has been rapidly escalating from a serious nuisance to an outright hostile attack!
Apparently, there is an individual or group of individuals (going under the moniker “Mike”) that have targetted the Bachmann Forum for an outright spam attack! As of this post, virtually ALL threads have been corrupted!
What is being done about this? Good question! Not sure. What I DO know is that the Bach-man has asked us NOT to post on any of the corrupted threads (which pretty much means them all!) as their webmaster is attempting to trace these spammers back to their source.
Another thing (that should be common sense) PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF THAT SPAM’S LINKS! I don’t know about you but I don’t want to add to the trouble that “Mike” might bring! Also, even though we are taught to “turn the other cheek”, PLEASE DON"T respond to or try to contact these spammers to ask them to stop or to admonish them as it has been tried and IT DIDN’T WORK!!! In fact, it might have made the situation worse!
Essentially, the Bachmann Forum is a cyberwar zone and there is nothing we can do to help other than to stay out of the way and let Bachmann Industries deal with it! If somebody hears something else, please report it here!
(Disclaimer-The preceding words and opinions are those of myself and do not necessarily reflect those of the administration and management of LSC. Further, I have never been and am in no way connected with Bachmann Industries and have no authority to speak for them.)

So , Mike’s getting a bad name again , huh ? I can live with it .
Mike (M)

mike… i don’ thin’ ya needs to worry about anyone else givin the name “mike” a bad name…

sorry… jus’ could’na pass that one up…

hey… at least you be a mike… 'stead of an mf… heh…heh…heh…

I was on the phone with the front office about 30 minutes ago, he thought he had it shut down, but seems it was only if you used links to get there.
If you had the Forum bookmarked, it still worked, and the SPAMmer had the bookmark.

They now have it shut DOWN completely until the web guy can sort it out.

I’ve passed along a lot of research material into SPAM prevention on php bbs that I have researched, we’ll see if that helps.

TOC

Somebody’s spamming my church’s guestbook, of all things.

Good grief. People need a life, or worse.

Tom, All:

Pretty unbelievable that scoundrels with evil intent or nothing better to do will attack simple websites that are there to promote fellowship and common interests. Really no point to their attack other than to cause folks heartburn and to spend time and money fixing the problems created.

The current attack on the Bachmann Forum is not spam in the classic sense, but rather a ‘denial of service’ type attack where the purpose is not to steer folks to online advertising but rather to damage the site, making it unusable. The previous couple of weeks’ activities were spamming, but this weekend’s attack was very different.

There has been a somewhat heated discussion on the B’mann site due to one (self appointed ‘expert’) person claiming to have directly contacted one of the (Russian) spammers last week and getting their apology and agreement to not spam the site. If you believe this, I have a bridge over the SF Bay that I can sell to you cheap!

I do think it is an open question as to whether that person’s activity has caused or is connected to the new attack this weekend. I’ll put my money on TOC’s position that it does increase the exposure and go with the concept of staying completely away from any response. More chance that (especially) spammers will just move on. This ‘denial of service’ attack is much more severe, so it is hard to tell where it is coming from, and more importantly, why it is happening.

It will be interesting to see if this causes B’mann to put a registration system in place. That would be preferable to the way it is now or them just deciding it is too much trouble and shutting it down permanently.

The current message at the Bachmann Forum (accessed via bookmark) says:
“Our Forum is currently down for maintenance. It will be available again shortly.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Apparently following suit from something after Hurricane Shad maybe?

Well, that clears up the Deja Vu, in any case. Particularly since they DO have a registration system (or did, anyway, last time I was there, which was some time ago.)

I was surprised, given the current state of things, that anyone even noticed…

Glitch?

JB,

There are no glitches, there are only under-developed features.
