Large Scale Central

Bachmann Coaches

I would like to detail the interiors of my Bacmann Jackson Sharp coaches. I want to start by eliminating the stock plastic floor/seat assembly. Does anyone have a lead where I might more authentic seats?

Thanks
Richard

Aristo’s Sierra passenger car seats are pretty decent, but good luck finding 'em. I’d maybe try calling Phil Jensen at Hartland Locomotive Works. I forget what the seats in his passenger cars look like, but I know he does sell parts. http://www.h-l-w.com

Later,

K

Thanks Kevin! I’ll give Phil a try.

What scale are these coaches. They may look similar enough to the Brill coaches I want to model?

Pretty sure that H-L-W is close enough to 1:24 that you would notice any difference from a galloping horse.

They scale pretty well to most Large Scale sizes, except 1:20. When run with 1:20cars they look pretty small.

You are correct, but I pull them with a 1:20 Porter which is very small so they don’t look too bad. I usually don’t run freight cars in the same train, unless they are my 1:24 freight cars that I’ve converted to 1:20 body mount Accucraft couplers.

Through the windows you can’t see much detail. So I made the seats for my scratch-built passenger cars, from blocks of wood and the slats from a discarded wooden shutter.

The shutter slats, when cut properly, gave me pre-rounded edges for the top and front of the seats.

I painted the interiors to add some visible detail; also added some people and junk in the combine…

Thanks for the suggestions…I’m currently working on five coaches and slowly turning them into the original Disneyland and Santa Fe coaches Walt had going around Disneyland in the early years. I have a Hartland made Lilly Belle that will be pulling them along with an LGB copy of the Lilly Belle coach. Aside from the fun of converting these coaches I’m learning about patience. I’m planning to create wood paneling for the interior using very light balsa wood stained. I thought having some more authentic seating would add to the experience.

While visiting the recently restored Combine at Griffith Park it was fascinating to see the lengths Disney went to making things work in the slightly smaller scale that he used. For instance school bus seats for the interior seating. The windows are also school bus windows. Everything done on a very tight budget. I find this stuff kind of cool.

I’ll post some pictures as I get a bit further into the project…time is not currently my friend.

Check out the Lasergang (see my post on Carter Bros Coaches.) Harald sells neat seats for his coach separately, and he speaks english (sort of - “crap cream soup” anyone?). They might be a bit big for a 1/24th or 1/22.5 coach.

Just FYI I emailed him just now to asked about seat pricing enough for two Carter Bro coaches and a combine shipped. I will pass on the information when he responds. With what Pete posted it sounds like a set of 6 are $13 bucks plus shipping. But I will pass it along when I know.

Pete - thanks for the link…I’ll check it out…and Devon thanks for letting me know what you find out. Looking forward to my weekend and some free time get a little more done with the coaches.

FYI:

Since I’m in the process of building one of the styrene versions of the Carter Brothers Combine, I can show you a comparison of the kit seats with those from a Bachmann coach. The CB seats are quite a bit wider but they are about the same height. One thing I’ve noticed is that even with buying cheap Chinese-made figures of about the right size (~1/24), their legs are a bit long so the CB seats are probably a good height.

I hope this helps a little.

Richard,

The seats are laser cut, and it is possible that Harald can cut a set in 1:22.5 or even 1:24 without major problems.

I do have a question.

For those who have used those seats in the past, how much of the detail can you really see through the windows?

David,

Maybe these photos will help.

Doc Watson

Doc, and that is kind of my point. If you put the camera, or your nose, against the windows you can see some of that detail. At any real distance you really cant see the detail.

Yes, I am a cheap bas, frugal person, and I don’t see spending money on details that cant bee seen. Yes, that is just my personal opinion.

For me the payoff is when visitors closely inspect the cars or when it comes around in the evening and the lights are on. The cars becoming the Disneyland and Santa Fe coaches will be a point of interest for most that see them. However, I am like you David where I’m not wanting to spend a ton of cash making happen…perhaps a little at a time. We’ll see…
