Bachmann Annie Update

David McCurdy brought a Bachmann Annie over to be updated. Inside the tender were an Aristo-Craft 27 MHz on-board receiver and accessory board, as well as, Sierra sound and adapter boards. David wanted to keep the Sierra sound board and a huge upward facing speaker, but everything else was removed. The new components to install were an Aristo-Craft Revolution receiver and adapter board, as well as, a Cordless Renovations lithium-ion battery pack. As I had never seen a Sierra sound board before, it was fortunate that David still had the manual. After reading it cover-to-cover, I began drawing a plan to squeeze it all in the tender. http://freightsheds.largescalecentral.com/users/son_of_a_cnr/_forumfiles/Wiring.bmp Although a number of modifications were made to the plan along the way, everything fit and worked well.

The linking button, battery pack switch, charging connector, and volume control (and programming) switch were all mounted on the front wall. The smaller connector provides power to the motor, while the larger connector powers the front light and activates the chuff sound.

It’s unfortunate that Sierra no longer make sounds boards for large scale trains, as this one sounded very good. Many of the sound functions could also be modified by using the volume control switch to re-program it.

Paul, did you have any trouble with the voltage from the Aristo/Sierra interface board not dropping to full zero volts, thus not triggering the idle sounds? On my Revo/Sierra installs, I found the Revo leaked just enough voltage at “0” that it was still feeding the Sierra enough of a voltage where it never knew it had “stopped.” This is particularly noticeable if you’re using the directional whistles and other voltage/polarity-controlled features of the Sierra. I ended up adding some diodes on the motor leads, with resistors going to ground to drop the motor input voltage to 0 when stopped.

Depending on the particular Revo and Sierra, I needed anywhere from 1 to 3 diodes. I do not know if there’s a difference between the original and sound Revos in this regard. I know the Super Revo board does drop to 0 just fine. Later, K

Please tell us what Cordless Renovations battery you used.

You always seem to know what battery fits-is there a secret you can share on how to choose?
